Toby is in bad shape, I just can't stop crying. The vet told me that she believes he is in liver failure and he has Cholaniophepatitis. She did blood work and his billirubin was 14 which is very high, it should be 1, plus his liver function test were all very high, the x-rays were pretty normal. Not sure how this happened, he is an indoor cat, no change in diet or food, no contact with harmful substances. They are keeping him, started an IV and pumping him with vitamins, tomorrow they are going to see if he can eat on his own, if not he will have a feeding tube, along with a liver biospy. I'm such a mess and I know that my typing is bad right now. I going to have a cup of tea and take a long hot bath to calm myself down and of course pray for my sweet baby boy that he recovers and is home with Misty and me soon. My heart is just breaking and I can't stop crying. Please keep him in your prayers, thanks.

I talked with Patricia this afternoon and Toby is more alert and they put a feeding tube in him. The vet was more positive on Toby's condition then last night. On Wed they are doing an obtopsy(sp) to check the liver.
Patricia went to visit Toby tonight and she said she will post an update later.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words and support, I truly appreciate it during this stressful time in my life. I was able to visit with Toby last night, he appear to be more alert, even though his condition is still very critical. The vet placed a feeding tube in him, its on his left side of his neck and he is receiving IV fluids with vitamins K, B, and KCL. He is receiving liquid nutrients in his feeding tube several times a day. Today, they will be mixing wet cat food along with the nutrients to give to him and tomorrow he will most likely have a liver biopsy to rule out cancer and to use as a tool to help get him better. He was smelling everything last night, my purse, my hands, face, the towel he was laying on and he wanted to jump down off the table to explore. I told him no, no he just settled down and placed his chin on my arm, closing his eyes and purring. I was pleased to see that because on Sunday, he was not moving. He looked tired and he is still yellow, he is not use to being in such a noisy place, every time he heard dogs barking or kitties meowing he would look, turning his head as to say were are they? When I picked him up he felt heavier and he was purring. I told him he needs to get better and come home to Misty and me and then we can go to the beach, as soon as I said the word beach, his eyes got big, he loves going to the beach. He looks funny, part of his mane is shaved do to the placement of the feeding tube, Toby is a Maine Coon cat, and he has a long beautiful coat. The techs and the vet both have told me what a good boy he is, so gentle and he lets them do anything without a fight or a growl. I've always have said that Toby is my gentle giant. It broke my heart when the vet told me to take his collar off of him the other night, I felt like a part of him was being taken away, he loves his collar, when I take it off the brush him, he just gives me a look as to say, hey that's mine, and when I would put it back on him he would purr and strut around the house as to say, look at me. I can't believe he got so sick, but I know he is getting the best possible care and I hope and pray he will recover and be home soon. I really miss my "little" boy, every morning he would come in my bedroom, jump on the bed and start to bite my toes, then he would jump down run down the hallway, if I didn't chase him, he would sneak back in the room and jump into the window sill, just as happy as can be, getting the morning sun, watching the birds and waiting for me to get up to hold him and of course feed him. At this point, I don't think I'll be going to Dewey, but Tom and Trish will be bringing Misty, I want her to go since I've be telling her for weeks now and I don't want her to miss all the fun, it just wouldn't be fair to her, so when you see her give he some pats and hugs, she is such a good girl and I know she is wondering about her "big brother kitty". Again thank you all for your kind thoughts and please keep Toby in your thoughts and prays. Thank you so much.

I got to visit with Toby last night and his eyes were big and bright and his face looked relaxed. I brought his favorite blanket and when he saw it he cuddled up in it purring. No vomiting, so that is a very good thing and his nutrients have been increased and he is tolerating it very well. He was trying to groomed himself and he kept licking the tape around the IV site and trying to pull it off, I told him no, Toby and I placed my hand there and he got my fingers in his mouth, trying to bite me, I thought yay, he is getting better, then he was trying to bite my hand, like it was a game. I took pictures of him last night and when Tom gets back from Dewey, I'll have him post them. Toby does have his biopsy today and if all goes well, he may be able to come home on Friday, with the feeding tube in place which is ok because it will be a lot easier to give him his medications that way. Looking back, I really think that Misty knew Toby was sick, 3 in the morning on Sunday, I heard her pacing in the kitchen, I thought what, its to early to go out, so I got up took her for a long walk and she did nothing. That morning I cut the grass and when I came back in the house, I called Misty and she came up the steps. She was very restless this past week-end and always wanting to go down stairs, I would tell her, no honey, Toby is not feeling well, but she went any way. When we were leaving she was very anxious and whining, looking at Toby in his carrier and when we were driving down the drive way, she was barking, her bark was loud and had a growl to it, like she was defending her home, not her normal bark. She was mad I was taking her kitty and I didn't take her with us. Every time I leave my house I tell her, now protect Toby and the house. I believe my angel girl was trying to tell me that Toby was sick and she wanted to be near him and protect him. Oh, Misty my smart baby girl, you knew before me, you are so smart and you were doing your job in protecting your kitty brother and keeping your eye on him, my sweet angel girl, Mommy loves you so much. Wow, dogs and cats are so smart and they share a strong bond with each other in their home. I keep you guys posted on Toby's progress, thank you for all of your support and prayers, they seem to be working.

Any news???

I spoke with the vet this evening after Toby's surgery and the news was not good. She told me that when she saw his gallbladder it appears that he may have cancer. She told me that in a cat, the gallbladder is shaped like a balloon, but Toby's is not and the walls are hard so she did a biopsy on his gallbladder along with the liver and we should have the results back either tomorrow or Friday. I don't understand how this can be happening, I mean just a few days ago he was running, playing getting on my dining room table which he knows is a no,no. he didn't appeared to be in any pain or distress until the weekend when he vomited and stopped eating, my heart is just breaking and I can't stop from crying,I just don't understand and he really is not that old. So, now I have to wait to see what the tests results show, oh, how I pray its not cancer and that maybe its just an infection. I'm not ready to say good bye to my sweet boy. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers, I know I sound like a broken record and I appreciate all your support and kind words.

I spoke to Dr. Hawkins last evening and the liver biopsy did come come. She told me that the small lobe in the liver is showing cancer, but it is only in that one small lobe, she has not gotten the results of the gall bladder yet. She did tell me that depending on the stage of the cancer, a cat, like a dog can live without a gall bladder and can live with a section of the liver gone. The type of cancer he has is Adenocarcinoma. So, once she gets the results back she will be contacting a specialist to consult with. I was able to bring Toby home last night, he is so happy to be home, he is purring and playing with his toys, and just so loving. He is getting his food though a feeding tube. 30-40 cc of A/D slurry, A/D mixed with clinicare along with his medications, which he gets once a day and his food 3 to 4 times a day. He is doing very well with his feedings. Just to look at him you never guess how sick he is. I am glad he is home and I can take care of my sweet baby boy.

Toby is looking a thousand times better than last week this time. I have not heard from Dr. Hawkins in reference to the gall bladder biopsy. Toby is doing very good with his tube feedings, I think he is tired of it, he keeps rubbing at the vet bandage. He is drinking water on his own and keeps looking at me to put food in his bowel, if I don't he sits there banging on the bowel with his paw and looking at me, so last evening I put a few of his dry food in his bowel and he ate it. I'm not sure if he can have both, the dry and liquid food, so tomorrow I am going to ask the vet. He just might be ready to eat on his own. Thank you all for your never ending support and prayers I really believe you guys are helping him get stronger, again, thank you so much.

He has an appointment this Thursday to see his vet, hopefully by then we will have all the test results back and be able to go to the next step, what ever that may be, surgery or not. He is drinking water on his own and eating some dry food, this morning he did not want his tube feeding, he was growling and trying to bite me. I didn't want to stress he out, so I stopped for a few minutes and then finished up the feeding. I hoping that on Thursday his feeding tube can come out.

Well, yesterday Toby was seen by our vet, Dr. Meghan Nahill, who is a "Cat Vet and small animal vet, such as rabbits, etc". She did a compete blood work up which included a liver profile and everything cam e back normal which is really good news, also, the new x-rays she took did not show and cancer in the lungs or other organs, now the gall bladder biopsy didn't really show anything, after 96 hours, no growth of the organism. She took me that this type of cancer is a fast moving cancer and he probably started with this problem back in the spring. So, since he is stable she recommended that he Dr. Kevin Delles, for an ultrasound, with the ultrasound he will be able to see the organs and the cancer and on the results, he will be able to tell me if surgery is the way to go or chemo, or if nothing we can do, if that is the case Toby will most likely not be here on Christmas. He is doing well today, told all his medications, not happy with that, mommy forcing medications down his throat, drinking water and eating his food. Now all we can do is wait, please continue to keep the little fellow in your good thoughts and prayers. Thank you.
