Wichita Greyhound Park closed last weekend. It was a sad time for us. A place we loved to go and spend time with family and good friends, is gone. Hopefully down the road it will reopen or another track will be built in the area. It was sad to see the dogs leave. The adoption group has done a marvelous job in helping to place the dogs that were left behind.

To bad about the closing. Was this a low end track?

Yes Wichita was a low end track. It was not always that way. It was once a shining star. It was a beautiful facility. But like anything else in the entertainment industry, if you dont advertise and promote the business it will fail. This will happen to more tracks, you can be sure of. The original owner sold the track some years back to a Las Vegas casino owner. His only intention of buying the track was to put slots in and possibly a casino. He didn't care one bit for the dogs. They were just a necessary evil.
Here is my advice to any of you out there that care about racing and the dogs. Don't assume that the NGA is going to be the police for all the problems. They have limited jurisdiction over track owners. Get involved in what is going on in your adoption group. Get involved in the racing industry. Let everyone know that the "Bad old Days" are not going to be tolerated anymore. Let them know that the people that own and train the dogs care about them. In order for our industry to thrive we must clean up our own house first. The media is our best friends or our worst nightmares. Any bad news about dog racing will be smeared all over the media. We have a long way to go.
