I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me and my family. We are picking up our newly adopted family member on Saturday, he's a 5yr old ex-racer named Elmo. Currently he is living in a home with children and a cat. We have 2 kids that are exstatic to get him but we have one concern.
We have a 9yr old 15lb mutant chihuaua. he is great with kids and loves being around us, and gets along well with other peoples dogs. We are worried about how to introduce the new dog to him? Any suggestions?

Congrats!

When you bring Elmo home I would muzzle him and slowly introduce him to your other dog. I would keep the muzzle on Elmo in the house and outside til you can see that it is ok.

Ditto what D2P said and don't be afraid to be firm with Elmo if he wants to play to hard with the other dog. He might be inquisitive- just make sure you keep his muzzle on.
He might not even give the other dog a second thought.
Congrats on getting Elmo!!!

Ditto on what d2p is saying we hauled 2 greys that were right out of the kennel with our other five from Florida to Pittsburgh and had them muzled. Hauled all seven in a cargo van and kept them in a motel room for 3 days and 2 nights no problems. Be firm with him and let him know who is boss

Thanks for all the advice! I'm sure I'll be back on here posting more once we pick him up. Hopefully no horror stories!

I like introducing at neutral territory if you can. A nearby park or public sidewalk NOT directly in front of your house. Have the dogs sniff each other to greet and then maybe walk them around the block together (smelling each other's pee mail), then walk them into your home together. Your Chihuahua may act aggressive if you bring in the greyhound into HIS home for the introductions, but if you have them meet in a neutral area (a place that the Chihuahua won't try and protect as his turf) it may work out better. Definitely agree on the muzzling at the initial meeting and then later in the home.
Good luck and congratulations!

Ditto that is how we introduced our first grey to our Collie/Shep mix. First at Pet Smart where we first saw her and then at the foster home when we adopted her. When we adopted Softee we had both her and Shadow together at the place where they were handling adoptions and the other adoptions were all at neutral sites.

I agree with the above advice that is how we introduced our two male dogs. Good luck with Elmo and congratulations on adopting a greyhound, it will be a journey but one well worth it. Patience is also necessary.

I have a 5lb Chihuahua, My Rosie never had a problem with him. But I was told by a very smart lady, When introducing a small dog to a large, make sure not to carry the little one. The larger dog will think, the little one is a toy or treat..

Thanks for all your help! Everything is going great. He and Toby our Chihuahua are getting along great. I was told Elmo was also his racing name? Would he be able to learn a new name if we tried to teach him one? Either way he's been great since we got him. Thanks again, I'll post some pictures once I get them on my comp

All mine learned new names - some had kennel names that I did not know about but I would say withing 24 hours they came running

They can learn a new name, I think ... our Tyson was Kup's Grandteton and they called him Teton... yeah, that wasn't working for us, so we found something similiar and he learned it the first time we called him by Tyson, he came running and got a biscuit for it LOL.
Hope everything continues to go well.
