Full Version: Update On Toby.
Patricia
Toby was seen yesterday by the Oncology doctor, Dr. Kevin Delles, who was very nice. He is a very straight forward doctor who does not sugar coat anything. He did a complete exam on Toby, and did another complete blood profile on him and everything came back normal, along with a normal physical exam. He than took Toby back for his ultrasound, about 40 minutes later, he explained to me what was going on with Toby. First he told me that there was some fluid in his stomach lying which he believes is from the surgery and he may have had a infection from the sutures, which should dry up in a few days. The gall bladder looked o.k., two of the walls appeared to be a little hard, but other than that, no infection, cancer cells were noted. The liver, there is a small part of the liver that is showing cancer and that part of the liver is lying up against the gall bladder. He told me that he believes that Toby was born with a enlarged liver and during his life he has had liver problems,he called them liver infection flare ups, the medical term is cholangitis, he believes that over the past ten years, each flare up has changed the cells, leading to cancer. He said that as a cat owner you would not pick up the infection, he may go a day or two a little less active, not eating as much or at all for a day or two, a little tummy ache, and a day or two he is back to normal. Two weeks ago the flare up was a bad one and then that is when the vet dx. him with cholangiohepatitis. He told me that the game plan is that Toby should have surgery and the part of the liver can be taken out and if the gall bladder is also showing cancer cells, they can take that out and he should live a healthy life, he most likely will be on liver medication the rest of his life. Before he talked to me about the results he did consult with the the surgered, Dr. Thomas Sooy, and they both agreed that this is the way to go. I felt better after Dr. Delles told me that if one of his cats had this condition he would not think twice about having this surgery done. I felt so much better after that statement because I was going ask him what he would have done. So, we are hoping that he can have the surgery done one day next week, they will call me today or tomorrow to set it up. My poor baby has been though so much, but if he did not get so sick I would never know that he has cancer. Thank you for all your support and prayers, he still needs them.

Wow Patricia, it sounds as if this is the way to go, especially if it will help him lead a healthier life. Especially free of these flare ups. Sounds like it's the way to go. Please keep us informed.

Prayers and hugs for you both...

Thanks everyone, he is acting like his old self. I know he is feeling better because every morning he runs from me because he knows its time for that awful medication. I've discovered that butter really helps to get a pill down a cat. biggrin.gif
