Please send this to everyone that you know that loves a dog, ask them to sign the petition and to pass it on and on and on.
I feel that there is much support in the state for this bill, but there is little awareness. Each of us have the responsibility to spread the word to all we know and encourage them to spread it to all they know.
If you are an Ohioan, you can find your Senator and Representative by going here:
http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/search.cfm#reps_zip
If you are out of state or out of the country, write Rep. Jim Hughes at district22@ohr.state.oh.us and Senator Gary Cates (they sponsors the bill) and Rep. David Daniels at district86@ohr.state.oh.us (who heads the committee on this bill)
They must hear from the people of the state and the rest of the country and beyond; not just those closely involved and for it and those against it but everyone that thinks that regulating commercial breeding kennels is a good idea. I know there are thousands and thousands that would step up to the plate if they just knew. This is the only way will be able to have some leverage on the puppy mills.
We are not involved in this because this is something we occasionally see, this is the norm. Are they all bad, no of course not, but regulations won't affect the ones that are already running good breeding kennels. The price of a State kennel license and the purchasing of a bond that is dependent on the size of the kennel is merely the cost of doing business and is not designed to nor will put any commercial kennel out of business. For a business that has never been regulated it's time that the kennel owners pay for the cost of doing business correctly in the State. Irvin Raber who is the former owner of the Buckeye Dog Auction and the president of the Holmes County Dog Breeder's Assoc., stood on the floor of the Ohio State House and said that the dog breeders in Holmes County collectively make 9 million dollars a year and he admittedly said that was a low estimate. Where is the money? In such a poor county with a dog pound that has about 12 kennels and still uses a gas chamber to euthanize. With the expenditure per student in Holmes County is at $7,836 while the statewide average is $9,349 (source, Ohio Dept. of Education) - WHERE IS THE MONEY???? We need laws that protect the dogs being commercially bred and hold those breeders responsible and accountable. The entire state looses if we loose this bill.
Also there was an article that just ran in the Holmes County Bargain Hunter. I've attached that for you to read. You can contact the paper and tell them that extolling puppy mills and the purchasing of dogs from pet stores is wrong. Here is the way to contact the paper. Scroll down to about the middle of the page and there is a way to send a comment to them. http://www.gpubs.com/contact.htm
Send this article and the way to contact the paper to all you know everywhere and let Holmes County know that extolling Holmes County puppy mills and the purchasing of dogs from pet stores is not acceptable.
With our collective voices we can make a difference!!!
