USA TODAY ought to be ashamed. So should the rest of the media elite who feed Americans a tragic dose of sensationalism to promote so-called common-sense anti-gun schemes that have nothing to do with common sense, or with preventing tragedy.
Americans aren't buying it. In a recent ABC News Poll, by a wide margin, the majority of Americans believe we need better enforcement of existing laws.
NRA agrees.
When asked about gun violence, 75% of Americans said they believe popular culture and the way kids are raised are responsible.
NRA agrees - but, ultimately, violent criminals are responsible for their own acts.
A new Pew Research Center poll found that an overwhelming majority of Americans oppose a ban on handgun ownership, and the ABC poll found support for the right of law-abiding citizens to carry a firearm for personal protection.
NRA agrees.
The ABC poll found that 83% of Americans support efforts to ensure that the records of adjudicated mental defectives are included in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
NRA agrees. It just makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is that there are those who take no shame in using the latest tragedy to proffer the same, tired anti-gun proposals of the past.
When a suicidal, homicidal, mentally deranged killer goes on a rampage, one more law or regulation isn't going to stop him. And, tragically, one copycat monster after another seems to have figured out that schools are prime targets for their carnage.
Trotting out more of the same old "gun-control" proposals doesn't cut it.
America's greatest treasures are in our schools. Yet we protect what's in our banks, our workplaces, our airports, even our malls more than we protect our children at school.
We need a national conversation about the need for every school district in America to design its own security strategy. Every option should be put on the table and available to fit the needs of a particular district or school. All Americans - parents, teachers, administrators, law enforcement and military personnel - must come together and unite to secure our schoolchildren.
I think most Americans - including millions of NRA members - agree.
