Summer is just around the corner. So here are some tips to protect your skin.

1. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., when the sun is the most damaging to the skin.

2. Be careful on cloudy days too. Eighty percent of the sun's rays still get though. so make sure to apply sunscreen every day, even in the winter.

3. Hang in the shade. Awnings, umbrellas and sail shades offer protection from the sun while you are frolicking on the beach.

4. Hats on. Baseball caps only protect your forehead. Go for the glam and try broad-rimmed hats that will protect your cheeks, nose and neck.

5. Slip on the shades and sun-protective wear. If you are a surfer wear rash guards impregnated with sun protective chemicals, trust me they are the best. Your sunglasses should wrap around and provide 100% UV protection.

6. Wear the right sunscreen. Look for products that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and go for at least SPF 30 or more instead of the standard 15.

7. Give it time. Sunscreen should go on at least 15 minutes before you go out in the sun.

8. Reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Especially after sweating a lot or immediately after swimming.

9. Don't hold back on the sunscreen. Slather it on, most people don't use enough.
