STUART, Fla. (UPI) -- Florida's Sunshine State Pigeon Fanciers' show may have been just the thing for those who see pigeons as more than just the source of dirty windshields.
Two devout pigeon fans, Benny Lopez and Jasten Carris, drove 120 miles to participate in this weekend's event in Jensen Beach, Fla., The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post said.
"My grandfather raised them back in the Bronx, and he got my father started, so it's a hobby that's been passed down," Lopez said. "It's easy to mingle with other pigeon flyers, but it's not really as popular in Florida as in New York."
"They're not short on breeding," said Carris, who only began raising the birds eight months ago. "But it's actually a relaxing hobby at times. If you give it a chance, you're sure to like it."
The Post said Saturday's event included a contest in which the birds could be judged on their wings, their overall shape and even their color.
