I believe in hell ... however I do not believe in the devil as a little goblin in red tights with a pitch fork with a tail and horns. I think the devil, his minions and his domain are alot more stealth than that.

Yes, I do. I don't think its a hot place with fire with little devils running around with pitch forks.

, giving us all a bad hair day. I think it is a sad and depressing place, very dark, and emotionally painful.

I voted No because I don't believe there is a "Hell." I think there are different levels of Hell where certain people will go depending on what you did on earth. The devil, flames etc and so forth I don't think that is true. I think the Church made this up to scare us. They have to have something that the people will be scared of so they will come back to church each week.

Gee I thought that I was already in hell every time I go to work.
I have to agree with you Tom. Religion was the means of controlling the population. Used all through the ages. Theology/History pretty much bears that out.
Hummmmm? Do I really want to get TOO deep into this subject? Yean, maybe. Just remember that politics and religion make for

Nope. Don't believe in hell. There has to be a place for the priests to scare us and make people come to church, scare some more and then they collect money.
Did God ever collect money if there is such a God? No..

Not all churches have priests (that is a Catholic thing) we have Reverends or Ministers. Hell is not something invented by them to scare us into believing (trust me if you don't have faith or believe, the idea of hell will not scare you into behaving). Hell is mentioned numerous times in the Bible (the Word of God my LORD and Creator) upon which my faith is based. Again JMHO, and my faith don't expect it to be yours.
Tara
P.S. the membership of God's church has always supported his children (the poor the needy, widows and orphans). There were people who sold everything to support the spreading of the gospel. I believe that all we have is gifted to us by God and therefore we must be good stewards of it and that includes helping the needy, poor and supporting the furtherance of His Word, this includes financially.

Its funny how some people can make a statement like a answer to the question with out any knowledge of the subject , what you think dose'nt matter , study the subject for say 20 years get deep into it and you might have a senceable answer----is there a hell , you better believe it , eternity is a long time.

To put it simply, Hell No! LOL
I don't believe in the Hell of the Bible. I believe you create your own hell here on Earth when you do bad things. Karma. When you die? Who knows? No one has come back to tell us. So my assumption is, when you die, you die. Just like every other living thing on this planet. Plants and animals. We all have an energy, a spark of life in us that will return to the earth and be replenished in another lifeform be it animal or plant.

This could get involved---so if there is no GOD you think we evolved from monkeys , where did the monkeys come from , why are there still monkeys , why is this planet here along with the billions of stars spaced trilllion's of light years apart , by a big bang where did the big bang come from.

I think we have the wrong idea of who or what GOD is. We try to make sense of things we can't make sense of yet. Religion to me is simply supersition and means to control people. I won't live my life based on a fear of what will happen to me if I don't follow certain rules. And why do the rules change? And why are there so many different versions of the bible. And why are there many different religions? Why will two football teams pray to God to win and only one team wins? Did the other team not deserve it? If there's only one god, is he lonely? Are there no others besides him? Who made God?

Great questions. We came from the apes-cavemen- and have evolved from them. They were the first here with the dinasours etc.
I believe earth was created by the big bang and then certain creatures formed all the way to the caveman.
Why do different faiths believe in their God? Is there more then one God?
I still believe priets, ministers etc play the hell scare card. If you don't come to church, give your money each week to the church, your soul is going to hell. When I was a church goer, the priest would tell us who gave what amount of money and who didn't and you need to give. Don't you love the Lord, god? You'll have to go to confession for you sin of not giving to God and so forth.

Yeah, we do try to make sense of what we don't understand. It's usually called SCIENCE, though.
Do you guys honestly believe the entire basis of religion is an "opiate to the masses"??? COME ON. Anyone that believes that has no religious history in their background, and are merely echoing a catchphrase. Since the dawn of man, we have questioned our existence, where we came from, and what we are doing here. To say that the entire basis of religion is crowd control is naive at best.
You say you don't want to live your life in fear? Great! I don't want to either. If you think that is what Christianity (or most other faiths, for that matter) is about, you are mistaken. The entire basis of Christianity is God's love for his creation, and our gratitude and acceptance of who he is, not his desire to torture and punish us.
Different versions of the Bible? Why are there so many different words in the English language that mean the same thing? Everyone comprehends slightly different fom their neighbor, thus the need for several different ways to say the same thing.
Praying to God for your team to win....hehehe....those types of prayers are always my favorite. That is called praying to glory. Asking God for something that has absolutely no affect on anything, no matter the outcome. Do you think God cares if the Bears win?
Your questions seem to be filled with some sort of contempt. Why is that?
WhippetTalk

No contempt at all. I just think that we should be more conerned about our time here on earth and how we treat each other rather than be worried about Heaven or Hell. And I don't like people (in general - no one here has said that) to tell me that I will burn in Hell (since this topic is about Hell) because I don't have or share the same form of Christianity that they do, because theirs is the one true religion. I am a person who is scientific in nature. I can't fathom the idea of one entity who calls all the shots about our world and our existance. So you are reading much more into my tone than what I am writing. I don't care or try to make anyone think I'm right and they are wrong. I'm just saying what I believe is true in my mind and my world. I can no more believe in God than a person of faith can believe there is no God.

Makes sense, WT. I grew up in a Baptist church, and always felt...I don't know...a rift of some sort. After taking a few years away from church, and attending a Lutheran church upon returning, I have a very different outlook than what was put upon me as a teen. Do I have all the answers-no way!! All I ask of people is that they think about what they believe and why they believe it. Like the saying-life is a journey, not a destination-I learn more about myself and what I believe every day.

I would never try to "convert" someone. I am a firm believer in personal faith and mine is very much that way. I guess I just have a harder time believing that all things are left to "happenstance". I just think it is easier to believe that a Creator is in control. We do need to be concerned with how we treat each other and the creation (animals, the enviroment ect.) while we are here that is why I believe we are told in the Bible "Do unto others as you would have done unto you", the problem is that because of sin we don't do that ... we don't put our neighbours good above our own. I find myself guilty of this ALL the time and ask my Lord and Saviour to help me do this better daily ... and He gives me the ability to turn the other cheek.
As for making a judgment on who will go to heaven or hell, I believe that is God's judgment to make not mine.
JMHO,
Tara
P.S. I hope I haven't offended anyone ... I just find this converation fascinating (most of my friends believe as I do so there really are no conversations about our faith LOL)

I think it's facinating too.

I don't mean to upset anyone or be disrespectful with my questions or answers. I just want to have a "conversation" with someone who has a different belief than I do. I think we get to know each other better that way.

You're assuming that the answer to prayer is about who deserves what, not who needs what. You're also assuming the answer to the prayers has anything to do with which team won. For all we know, the answer(s) were all about the individual players and what they did or didn't acheive that day.
I think you're right about people having the wrong idea about what God is, or isn't. Can we even wrap our minds around something that's supposed to be outside of time and omnipotent? Really? I think religion and holy books are man's attempt to do just that. We're barely successful. But we're coming into an age now where scientists are discovering amazing things through physics - I can't wait to see what happens in the next 30 years or so.
