Saving the Racers

"In 2006, there were nearly 25,000 greyhounds born in this country. Nearly 23,000 of those entered the racing system. That same year, about 14,800 greyhounds were pushed out of that same system and ended up in loving homes through adoptions.

About 8,500 weren't so lucky and ended up euthanized."

I'm no mathematician but if 25,000 we born and 8500 were euthanized that is a little more than 10% that the NGA/GPA say get killed.

Good point. Guess they went to the farm, or the owners kept them.

That's a great article.

And nobody knows for sure how many REALLY get put down. I don't think the statistics are very reliable, since there aren't always records kept.

If the REAL adoption rate was flattering to the business we'd know them Ever seen the economic impact studies the industry publishes ever year? You know what they pay a consulting firm to generate that? They name the numer of jobs created, revenue generated and so on. So if the NGA/AGTOA thought full disclosure of adoption figures would benefit then we'd know them to the dog. Fact is the truth isn't what they want out there.

GPA isn't helping with the figures either, they won't cooperate with the numbers, so that has really hampered trying to get real numbers.

No they aren't. I sure wish they(GPA) would make it a priority. GPA seems to be the most well organized and certainly the most credible adoption organization we have and so they should be able to drive this. Perhaps a change in leadership at the national level, either at GPA or NGA will bring it about? I think both spokesmen (Goree and Guccione) have been there about 10 years so maybe it is time for a fresh perspective and understanding that the time for saying "but look at the progress the industry has made" should be replaced with "100% adoption now".

GPA is a great organization but maybe we do need new leadership. We need that 100% adoption rate.
