Full Version: Been out hunting for a loose greyhound
Pipi5
We "heard" there was a loose greyhound in Midtown Memphis...our coordinator for lost dogs/rescue group checked with the adoption kennel, no one had called in. We've watched the papers & the person who reported it never heard from the guy here in Memphis again.
Well today we got another report. Several people saw the dog this afternoon but lost it in the search...
So I get the "search & rescue" email asking for someone to come help. I'm more than 25 miles from the site & its 4:30, getting dark...but I go. My gut feeling was just go poke around & maybe you'll find him.
I read all the time about the searches & how the dogs are not found for months. We had a search & rescue back in December & luckily both dogs were found...it was so cold & one of the dogs actually had on PJ's. You just don't know how difficult the searches are until you take part in them. Driving up & down the streets, asking people if they've seen the dog, going down alleys...and if you're not careful, going into not so pleasant neighborhoods.
The area this dog is loose in is a nicer section of Memphis, but we've been told tonight, that its crossing a very very very busy street in down town Memphis. Someone has put a feeding station out. No one has reported it missing to the adoption kennel, to the newspaper & there are no signs out.
Our "rescue" coordinator is going to put fliers out tomorrow, we've got a DJ who owns 2 greyhounds who will do several spots on his show in the morning. We handed out business cards this evening.
But man...this is tough work. We had descent weather this afternoon, but it was turning off cold.
I applaude those who do this alot. emo-applause.gif emo-applause.gif emo-applause.gif

I really hope this dog will be found sound and safe. Searching for a lost grey is tough work, but it's worth it, especially if it's found ok. Thanks Hilda for helping them look for this lost soul. emo-applause.gif

We've had alot of sightings...but yesterday when several "hound" searchers went out, no one saw him. He's staying in a certain area of Memphis...lots of fast food & resteraunts nearby...the scarey thing is he's crossing a 5 lane street in downtown Memphis. Several people are putting out food & the heart warming thing is several more people have said they'd keep food out for him.
The director of the adoption kennels is getting in contact with several of the rescue groups in Memphis to see if we can get a large "live trap" & see if we can catch this skittish guy.
I didn't get to go out yesterday evening due to church commitments, but I'm going after work today. Its pretty out today so hopefully I'll have some sunlight until at least 6pm & this doggie is white! So that'll help too. I've got catfood with me & some dog treats.
Everyone has told us he's very skittish & runs off when they try to approach him. What I'd like to do is just get him in my sights, then call in people for help. We've asked everyone to NOT chase him...we want to keep him in this certain area away from the big streets.
We don't know who's greyhound he is, we've had no reports. No one has called in, no one has put an ad in the paper. We're thinking someone's just turned him out. I will certainly keep you all posted!!! emo-heartbeat.gif

Just got home, no sightings. But I did get 13 fliers out on stop signs & poles. I handed out a few. Talked to a few people who had seen the dog before, but no one has seen him today.
I went by the food station, the canned food is still there...but all but 1 biscuit was gone, so I put some more out.
I put fliers out on both sides of the 6 lane street...

The caught one here with garlic laced chicken and they had a humane cage/trap emo-angelic001.gif emo-angelic001.gif Still praying you will catch him soon

Everyone that has been spoken to around the feeding station said they've seen him, but he runs away when approached. The adoption kennel director has checked with a few rescue groups in Memphis to see if they have a live trap...and I think she's called someone with the Memphis Humane Society & the Shelter (2 different places). BUT now we're getting reports that it might not even be a greyhound.
I might go back out looking this afternoon when I get off work...depends on the weather. I figured if its raining, he's going to be hiding some place.
Odd thing is, I didn't see any stray dogs anywhere I went. Saw alot of cats, but they all seemed very relaxed & laying on porches.

Well here's the latest.
We've tried on several different days to get in touch with this woman that lives in the apartment building who is putting food out for the dog. Since Monday, everyone has told us the dog got rescued by a group...but no one knows who...they told us that "Pat" would know but "Pat" isn't returning phone calls.
When I went by there last night & put out fliers, the food was still out.
Laura, the search & rescue coordinator went today again, food was still there. No one has seen the dog since Sunday.
All the shelters know to call MSGAO if they get a greyhound & none of them have called, however back in December when 3 got out at one time, one ended up in the Memphis Shelter & they didn't call us for 6 days. The owners FINALLY got motivated & went over there...anyway...
So hopefully this Pat person will call tonight & let us know if the "greyhound" is still out there or what.
I didn't go tonight because of the above information & I'm not going tomorrow night because we're cat testing.
