Belle just has a seizure she had one in May on 2007 and they had her on Phenibarbital but took her off of it as she did not have any more. This one lasted 2 to 3 minutes and luckily for us she was in her crate. Koolaid, Hershey and Penske came running into the living room when the heard the comotion. Her legs were stiff as a board and of course a lot of mucus from her mouth. When she came out of it she started growling at me and Dave. Cannot get hold of my vet but will keep a close watch on her until I get hold of him.

This am she seems okay - got very frisky last night about an hour after the seizure. Heading out for the craft show and Dave will be checking on the kids every 2 to 3 hours. Belle is crated so if she has another one while we are out she will not be attacked by the other hounds and they will all have turn out muzzles on (the other three that are in the living room where Belle is crated).

Poor Belle, I hope she is doing better this afternoon.

When I was growing up we had a poodle who had them on a regular basis.

Do you have to take her to see the vet? I would be worried it could get worse.

I am calling the vet in the am - really weird that she had one 11 months ago and then this one. Checked with one of her siblings in Kentucky and she is okay the other two never returned my e-mails when I notified them of Belle's first seizure.

Beryl, I know its pretty scary. There is a period of time after the end of a seizure. Its called the postictal stage. Post seizure if you will. This is a period of confusion and they may be ataxic (unsteady on their feet). Thats probably why Belle growled. Its self limiting and given a little time to rest in a safe place this period of confusion will resolve itself. May be a good idea to put her back on the phenobarbital or your vet may have another drug to try. Kisses to your baby and lets hope that she remains seizure free.

This time her post seizure was not as long as the 1st one. Her first one she was lethargic for over 45 minutes and had trouble walking and going down stairs. This one only lasted about 5 minutes and it had started while she was sleeping. I do have phenobarbital here left from her first seizure but will not give it to her unless advised by her vet. The vet that had given it to her originally wanted her off of it cold turkey and I told him no way (I had read up on it and picked the brains of a few doctors at the hospital of what would happen if you went off pheno cold turkey). My vet's office opens at 9 so I will be on the phone and of course the phone will be busy so we will be using speed dial until I get through. When she growled at us we closed the crate door so she was secure and we had removed the other fur kids out of the room where this took place even tho they were at the gate waiting to get back in

Smart move. I'm glad she is better. And I'm glad you are a WISE consumer of medical stuff. Its nice to see that some people will actually question their physicians and vets. Its a good practice and I wish more people would do it.

I do have a medical background and am a graduate medical assistant so I am wise to a lot of medical issues. I work at UPMC McKeesport and can pick the brains of some of the MD's. Shadow our first grey had her path report and x-rays checked by a few doctors there. A couple of them got an education in a greyhound's body with the bones quite like the humans. A lot of the people at the hospital never ask me how are you it is How are your dogs? or the other day when I was asked how I felt I said a little iffy and was asked is it about Softee and I am also know as the greyhound lady. I swear if anyone walks into that hospital and say I want that person with the greyhounds they would all point their finger to my office

I'm lucky in that respect too. There are 10 ICU's in our main campus. I work in one of them. There are a lot of people in that unit that are dog-people. If I have dog issues going on, I have a lot of support. They read a bunch of our stuff too. I even had a neurosurgeon willing to work with my vet when Gus nailed himself good by knocking over the large solid concrete birdbath with his head. I thought he had a skull fracture and was doing neuro checks for days. I do love my docs!

With Shadow I had two Oncologists read her x-rays and Path reports and two pathologists go over her path report and one even checked her out after the surgery and when the second found out about it she came in too. The girls smuggled her into the hospital. We were lucky as their office was on a ground floor. Softee's path report was also checked out by the same two pathologists. I have found out a smile goes a long way.
I have even picked the brain of a pediatric cardiologist

Just got through to the Vet's office they will tell Dr. O'Leary and give me a call back. Do not seem too worried as they are not cluster seizures and she is not having them on a daily basis. Will post as soon as I hear from the vet. She is doing greyt and will see how she behaves today

Just off the phone with the vet and i was told to watch for a pattern. If she has another one I am to get hold of them as there was an 11 month gap between the first one and this one they are not going to medicate her.

They shouldn't have taken her off the phenobarbital, that's to keep her from having the seizures....so the vet may put her back on. Gabby is on 400mg a day...she has seizures when she gets under stress...like when Pegasus died, when Jack got his ear bitten off & when Dear was sick. I'm waiting to see if she has one because of BuyCut.

I forgot to add, alot of times they won't put them on phenobarbital if the seizures are far apart...like this time...11 months is good. If she has them more than 3 times a week or like every day...then phenobarbital is the way to go.
At least its not expensive....

Yes Hilda I think that young vet rushed to fast with her first one and put her on Phenobarbital and then wanted to take her off cold turkey. Dr. O'Leary said to watch for a pattern so far so good she is okay.

When Time was acting like he was having a small seizure, we took him to the vet, ours said just keep track of what happened or what set it off and then if it happened again we would have a journal as to what was going on. He said no meds at this time.

That is exactly what Dr. O'Leary said. This time she was sleeping and I think she was sleeping with the first one. That one happened very early in the am and woke us up.

Beryl, my friend Cynde, her dog Captain has his seizures while he's asleep! They thought the first time that he was dreaming, but then she noticed his eyes were open...he screams during his seizures...so she's having to keep him in the spare room during the time they're not at home.

Belle has only had two and both times were are pretty sure she was alseep. No screaming just stiff legs and all that twitching. The first she ended up in the attic cupboard and the second she was already in her crate. I do not know of anything that would of set her off and with 11 months between them who knows why it is happening.
