Slim ripped out a toenail the other day. it keeps bleeding and he keeps screwing around with it, licking it and whatnot. We bandaged it the first day after cleaning it out really good, and thought it best to air it out the next day but he keeps licking it and whatnot, so it bleeds more. I thought i would ask here before setting him up with an appointment. I know im probably gonna go to the vet he will probably just give us some antibiotics to ward off infection. any home remedies before i do that?

Was the whole toe nail ripped out? The whole toe joint?

Depending on the nature of injury, the torn toenail may be painful. Care should be taken to avoid getting bit. A muzzle is advisable. Using a nail clipper, remove the broken end of nail. Gently wash the area with warm water and a mild skin cleanser or soap. Apply gentle but firm pressure with a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If there is a nail 'stump' visible, apply an antibiotic ointment to the remaining toenail and place a light wrap.

You could also try EMT gel for the bleeding...

Every time Shadow ripped out a nail we had to take her to the vet to get the bleeding stopped and then they had to do a little bit of surgery. The packed it and wrapped it up pretty good with vet wrap. Have to worry about infections

not sure exactly where it was ripped off, it looks like a bloody stump, but im sure im just exaggerating. She said the whole toenail is gone, and her powdery stuff didnt stop the bleeding so we got some of the gel stuff which has some numbing properties to it so hopefully he will quit trying to self doctor. we also wrapped it with vet wrap, so we will keep an eye on it and see....

she? her powdery stuff? did this happen at a groomer's or something? or do you mean Gwen (i think i got the name right) tried some powdered stuff?!
if it really is just the nail cut/ripped back really far i would use soap and water to clean off the stop powder (cuz that stuff is messy when you use alot) and try some gel, wrap it up and keep Sim from licking it.. i wouldn't run to the vet just yet, keep an eye on it for a day or two then you should know if its vet worthy or not!
Good Luck!

Anything that happens to our pups, we always see the vet esp if it's bleeding.

Yeah she = gwen and powdery stuff = the stuff she uses when she cuts nails too much into the quick. Gwen has worked as a groomer for her own business, and shes also worked in a vets office, so she remotely knows what she is doing, but im the worrier, hence the reason i posted on here.
Shortly after posting we bought the gel stuff and it seemed to be working. It doesnt look infected, the bleeding has effectively stopped and he has stopped licking it. We dont have it wrapped anymore and she cleans it with soap and water every day.
good to go, vets office visit avoided....

Good News! I now remember reading somewhere that Gwen was a groomer so i figured she would know what she's doing when it comes to bleeding nails! So glad Sim is getting well!
