As the weather has been beautifully sunny here this past week and I got a sunburn (d'uh on my part). This got me to thinking ... Can dogs sunburn? What do you do to prevent it and where do you need to be the most concerned (nose, bare bum, bare chest ect.)
Thanks,
Tara

after just a quick google i found this..
| QUOTE |
| All Greyhounds will and can sunburn. White dogs with pinker skin are usually more easily burned. USE SUNBLOCK if your Greyhound has to be out in the sun for any length of time. You can use people sunblock or buy some at Petsmart. |

Be mindful if your dog is a sunbather. Many Greyhounds love to sunbathe—which can lead to sunburn, yes, sunburn! Hounds with pale or thin coats are particularly susceptible. While most Greyhound coats aren’t usually long enough to warrant it—avoid shaving or trimming their coats, as it increases the chance of sunburn. Consider doggie sunscreen if your dog is a sun worshiper. |

Very good advice Hannah! Thanks for posting. I do know that greyhounds easily sunburn.

i know some people shave their dogs down during the summer because they don't want them to get hot (not just talking about cute lil' summer cuts) anyhoo, what some people don't know is that their hair is what protects them from the elements of weather.. even heat! but then again this is a debatable subject, which i learned working at the kennel and being around several AKC people who show dogs...

My guys personlly aren't out in the sun long enough to do any harm, but some people don't realize that without that undercoat to protect the skin, they will burn quickly through the top coat. My brood has a thicker coat than most, but as I said, they're not out long enough to burn. Shaving them makes it easier for them to burn, but if they aren't out in the sun, then I would think it's ok. But most greyhounds are so short haired, why shave.

Dozer nose is a BIG (

) concern this summer. I have the sunscreen already by the door. Can't have my babies nose peeling.

I was told that the white or the lighter colored greys sunburn faster that the darker ones. I keep a close watch on Koolaid she loves to sunbathe but also have doggy sunscreen on hand

Thanks guys. I bought the spray on sunblock so I am hoping that makes it easier. I thought maybe I was just being a bit over protective. I don't feel so stupid now. Now my next question ... how do you apply it to make sure it doesn't just stay in the hair?

I 'll give it a try ... the things we do for our pups

.
Speaking of that the other day we bought a baby gate, we didn't even have a baby gate when our kids were babies

Even though we kept a good eye on our hounds at GIG, 2 of ours came home with some sunburn on their bald butts. It's not very bad, and this morning it's already gone. When it was overcast, it was nice and cooler, but the sun would come out, and get hot. (80 degrees) Just enough to give them a burn. I was mad at myself for not taking sunblock for them, but I wasn't expecting the sun to come out.
