Unfortunately gwen is out of town and is going to be gone for some time, so im playing single dad with the boys and found that slim has 2 open wounds near his rear quarters, but in front of the quarter, one big one where the skin is stretched, and another smaller one further up the side of his body. Unfortunately it looks like teethmarks. We are back up in Colorado and are next to my grandmothers house where the dogs are free to romp and play in the backyard and it wouldnt surprise me if Guinness (grandmas schnauzer) played a little too rough. Guess i cant leave them alone back there.
Anwyays, i went to let them out tonight, and i noticed when slim got up he winced a bit, and i just chalked it up to a leg falling asleep which usually happens with these two, and they think its some crazy thing they need to yelp at. So i let them outside, they did their business, and came back in. Bullet had his nose in slims crotch, so when i told him to stop being gay, i noticed something discolored there, and saw the wound. I cleaned it with a washrag and warm water, and further cleaned it with peroxide.
I'm pretty sure its going to require stitches, but its not bleeding much, and i think it can wait till morning, just thought id post here and see if anyone has any advice. If i dont hear anything, ill take him to the vet in the AM.

Dont wait too long if they require stitches. Kiss the boo boo's and hug the hound. I've learned to always stay close when my three are out cause the playing has a tendency to get out of hand sometimes.

Poor Slim! if there is a question about stitches then i would go the vet route, and since its already the AM you might already be there!

100% Vet route. Softee had a small slit which we did not know about and ended up with a drain and 9 staples. Play it safe so you will not be sorry.

especially with the way greyhound skin is so thin and stretchy

well i just dropped slim off at the vet. I told bullet he needs to get a job to help pay for the bill.... lol
They arent too used to the big backyard since for the last 6 months we just take them out to the lake or take them for walks around the RV park, so they are never alone in a large area. I can see them from the window of the RV when they play and they get to running and whatnot, and im thinking that instinct took over and bullet got competative and nipped at slim.
Rather than muzzle them all the time, what ill do is limit the time they are outside by themselves by not just letting the backyard babysit them..... any other advice? I know being outside is good for them, especially since it hasnt gotten too terribly hot for bullet yet, but i just dont want to be taking a dog to the vet every month.

I would muzzle the greys if they are going to be out unsupervised , They really don't mind and its much cheaper then a vet bill. I always supervise nongreys when there with greys. Good luck. ( hows slim ?)

Muzzle or stay outside and supervise. We separate our 6 pack if we are not outside with them even with muzzles
Update on Slim please

Our three go out one at a time when I first get home from work. Too routy and full of zoomies. Muzzled when all three are in the car. I'm out on the patio when they are all three out together. Playtime can get snarky.

Softee's 1" slit was $500.00 and I am glad Slim is okay

ouch.... $500, well my $375 doesnt seem so bad now..... slim had both wounds patched up, some pain/anti inflammatory meds as well as some antibiotics. He seems to be doing well, and is resting comfortably on his freshly laundered bedding.
i gotta keep him from licking it, and he is definitely a licker judging from the toenail thing a few weeks back, so i think im going to get him used to his muzzle by making him wear it when i cant supervise him.

yeah greyhounds love to lick! wound or no wound! good luck

Didn't they give you an E collar for him? A muzzle might irritate it try folding a large towel in 4 lengthwise and wrap around his neck and pin it. We did that with Jams when she had her boo boo and she could not reach it to lick it

Keep an eye on the wound if you are using a muzzle they can mess the wound up and rip out the sutures/staples. Hershey did and she is my smallest

nope, checked it this morning and everything is fine.... gwen is a lot better at this stuff than i am... lol
i guess i need to go buy some cheese or something to wrap his pills up in so he will eat them? any suggestions?
Beryl
3rd May 2008 - 10:27 AM
If he is as smart as Softee and Belle you may have to ram them. Some swear by peanut butter and others by cream cheese. We have tried wrapping ours but they find them. I have heard wrapping in a small chunk of meat or lunch meat. Try all of the tricks of the trade and see what works for you...

well, since i havent gone shopping for like 2 weeks (bachelor life is great..... lol) i was able to stick his rymadil in some canned food, since he didnt eat it readily like the vet said he might, and i did the same thing with his antibiotic, so lets hope its that easy for the next week and a half... lol
Beryl
3rd May 2008 - 11:40 AM
Hope it is that easy for you. Me demons will spit the pills out so it is ram them down their throat. Even pills that smell good they will not take readily
Remember to give those meds with food

Try Braunschweiger. You know that stuff, liverwurst , in the same area as lunch meat, comes in round log or slices... Mine have NEVER turned their nose up at that stuff. And I mean - NEVER!!! -even when on meds for a long time. And it doesn't take much to hide the pill in. Its also pretty good with mayo and a slice of onion on rye for lunch. Yum!

Bread worked for us for a while and not even without pills two of mine, Softee and Jams won't touch bread if their life depended on it. I have even tried PBJ bread will not touch it. Different story with the other four...Good Luck with Slim and the pill thing

Good for you but Softee only has half her teeth also at the young age of 14 & 9 months. She is a shrewd one but acts like a lady at all times

except at the vets when she does not want to be touched or held and screams her head off

so the first time i had to feed him a pill, i chose the one that the vet said were chewable, and that he would more than likely eat it right up, and he didnt... well today i had buried the pill in some bread and he ended up picking at the bread, maybe because it was wheat instead of white, but the pills ended up just sitting on his bed after he at the bread around it, finally.... i thought id have to grab em and try it again, but next thing i know he ate them too! lol... i might have a pill popping dog on my hands!
