Pirate Pete had been captured by a Spanish general and sentenced to death by a 20-man firing squad. Pete cringed. he knew they were such a bad shots that they would often simply maim the condemned, leaving him to bleed to death. The general only allowed one bullet per soldier to save on ammunition. The thought of a slow, painful death made Pete beg for mercy. "Very well, you may choose where the men stand when they shoot you,and I will double the squad to ensure a quicker death," the general said. "And to show I'm not totally heartless, if you are not dead by sundown, I'll release you to die peacefully outside the compound." Returning the next day, the general found Pete had been set free, alive and well. "How could this be?" the general demanded. "It was where Pete had us stand," the captain of the squad explained.
Where did Pete tell them to stand?
