Actually, during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1955, Pierre Levegh became airborne after hitting another car and crashed into an earthen mound near the track wall; his vehicle disintegrated, scattering components into the crowd and creating a deadly fire. The crash killed Levegh and 82 spectators, more than 100 were injured. In order to keep the spectators off the roads, the race was not canceled, giving emergency vehicles easier access to the accident site.
