Full Version: Speaking of Solstice
simile
I'm hoping everyone had a great Summer Solstice. It's a pretty big deal here in Fairbanks. We have a lot of events throughout the day and into the night: a street fair downtown, a semi-pro baseball game that starts at 10pm (they don't turn on any lights), a 10k run where a lot of the runners dress up in costumes (also starts at 10pm), and a bunch of parties all over town. There's a bit of pagan in all of us up here, I guess emo-hehe.gif .

Anyway, we celebrated Solstice by checking out part of the run, then going up to a place called Murphy Dome to check out the sun not setting. It's one of the hills outside of town, and it has some great views. Here are a couple pictures. These were taken right about midnight.

This sits on top of the hill. It's an Air Force radar thing - part of the DEW system.

Wow! I've always wanted to go to Alaska. Thank you for sharing. That skeeter made me itch...

That mosquito was huge, and so were all of her little buddies. It's the main reason we didn't stay up there too long - the skeeters to dive bombing the dogs anytime we stood still, so we had to stay on the move. Thankfully, none of the bugs up here carry any nasty diseases, just a lot of itch power.
