Full Version: THE ANSWER TO MY PROBLEM
gennygrey
Well,

Shadow does not like his crate. When I came home today, guess who was out of his crate at the top of the stairs greeting me. When I went to his crate, their was blood and a tooth on the floor around it. He broke 3 teeth. His two bottom baby molars towards the front broke on both sides. One fell out and the other had to be pulled. His canine incisor is fractured and needs a root canal and reconstruction. His nerve root is sticking out of his tooth. Needless to say we had an Emergency Vet Trip. She shot him up with pain medication and antibiotics and gave me a 2 week supply. He is going to the dental surgeon on 8/4. I feel horrible. He did not even destruct the house while I was gone. I wish I could have just let go and left him out of the crate. Well tomarrow is going to be the first day that I am leaving him outside of the crate. I am going to put on his muzzle because I do not want him to chew anything that could hurt his open gums. I am really sad and I hope he is ok now that he no longer needs to be in the crate.

Can you just baby gate off certain rooms.

We had a problem with our first grey. First we were told it was separation anxiety, but it was space issues.
So we let her out of the crate, and she hasn't been in it since. (over 4 years ago) She's never done 1 destructive thing.

Some greyhounds just don't want to be crated, and with hounds like that, it's best for them to stay out of their crates. I'm so sorry about what he's done to himself. He's telling you no more crate.

What we did with our first grey was; my wife and I pretended to leave, leaving her out of the crate. I started up the truck and drove away, leaving my wife on the back porch to look into windows at what she was doing. She ran to the couch to look out the window at me leaving the driveway and back to the back door. She did this a couple of times, then went to the couch and went to sleep. She's been fine ever since.

Maybe you could try something like that, to see what he'll do. If you can't look into windows, just go outside and wait for a little bit before going in. Make the times longer and longer each time until you know he'll be ok by himself.

Oh no. When I first got Misty she also got out of her crate and met me at the door, she didn't her herself getting out. I'm so sorry for Shadow and I hope everything goes well for the little one. Keeping him muzzle sound like a good idea.

Our Ty was the same way only we had poo mixed in with the blood. So we uncrated him and as Jimmy's pup we haven't had an issue since. He hasn't been destructive or anything. We leave he is on his bed we come home we may get an ear twitch ... if he feels like it. Ty even keeps our Lab who is not crazy about being uncrated calm (this is the only time they will share Ty's bed).
Just like alone training try him with uncrating for short periods at first and you should transition fairly easily.
I should also say that we baby gate them in the living room area.
Good Luck,
Tara

We did the same thing with a first grey that Jimmy did and she was fine and we are the house of baby gates. If we do not want them going anywhere we baby gate them out of that area. We also keep Jams and Softee in the dining room and Penske, Hershey and Koolaid in the Living Room and all are muzzled except Softee. Belle is crated for her own protection as if she has a seizure when we are not home we know that the three holigans in the living room can't get to her.

Well it has been day 3 and Shadow is doing awesome not being crated. He goes to the window, and looks out when we leave and then sleeps or collects things to pack rat but he does not chew. I really wish we would have left him out of the crate sooner. emo-goodnews.gif

Good news. When we got Suzy, we would come home and her dog bed in the crate would be all wet, like slober. We then realized she didn't like her crate, she hates being in small confined areas, plus a little SA.
So, from then on we never crated her and she did fine being out.

Continued good luck.
