[B] well it has been awhile getting back to the board -- we have been busy building the best doggie playyard for our three beauties --- during which our old guy Neddie broke his toe -- he was thinking he was all that with the girls and took off like it was the good ol' days -- we got thru that and i must say he healed nicely so then little CeCe took off on a binge to run circles and she cut her toe so off to the Doc again -- let me back up for a moment -- when we got our little missy she had had a cut on the same toe listed in her records and two months after we got her the same toe bleed again for no apparent reason so on to the Doc - she was given antibiotics and it took forever it seemed to heal, but with her heart i thought o.k. thats reasonable so finally it was fine but then this has happened so the wonderful Doc said X-rays to see what is going on and she has a bone infection -- it is in the P-3 just above the nail --- So yes i am worried it has been there for a good while so the question is what are the types of bone infection besides cancer? Everything i looked up all went to cancer except one and that was Osteomyelitis and it eats away at the bone -- she will do a very strong antibiotic to help the infection go away -- the course of pills runs 6 weeks and nothing can be done until the infection clears up --- So if anyone has heard of this or has dealt with this type of infection please let me know --- thanks so much

I've had no experience with this, but just want to tell you how sorry I am that you are dealing with this. I will add you to my prayers.

There is a BIG difference between bone cancer and bone infection.(Osteomyelitis). A bone infection is not cancer. Infection is the proliferation of bacteria whether its on a cut, in the blood, bladder or any other tissue. When an infection is in the bone it can be very difficult to fix.. It usually requires long term antibiotics that are specific to the bacteria causing the infection. Even in humans it can be a daunting problem. I would, however, much rather try to deal with a bone infection than bone cancer.

That would be a really strange location for osteo -- it almost always occurs in the long bones of the leg.

I too haven't heard of this, but my grey Daisy who I lost in January had Ostreoscoma (bone cancer). She had a bump that came up on her arm/ thigh and it grew over time or wouldn't go away. It wasn't until she had a biopsy done and the bump cut from her arm/thigh and sent of for tests that it was found to be this.
The grey I have been taking care of has large lumps on his elbows and still there.
They grown too, but not solid like Daisy's bump. He's are more watery type/soft tissue.

Large fluid lumps on the elbows are likely something called a hygroma -- they're basically a fluid-filled capsule which develops in reaction to pressure:

Hi,
I am dealing with bone infection in my boy right now. After the run of antibiotics the vet will x-ray your dog again and see if the antibiotics have impacted the current condition of the bone. If so, its reasonable to assume what you are dealing with is infection. Bone infections take a long time to clear and sometimes don't. My vets opinion from the start was that even if we were dealing with cancer, it was localized and had become cancerous related to the injury. If worse comes to worse, the toe can be removed and the dog will be fine. My dog had ripped a toenail completely out, and I believe with his age (4), they just retired him, since his last race was Feb 2007, and I got him on March 30. Like your dog, the toe was partially healed, but clearly still painful. It has been very costly to treat, and he's still not 100%, so I am not certain at this point that removal of the toe would not have just been better for him. We're at 3 full months of treatment now. It certainly would have been easier on my pocketbook and it still may come to that. Good luck to you with your baby.
