Our Suzy likes to eat dirt rocks. She is sneaky. She will grab some and then carry it in the house on the sofa. So when we sit down, it's like ewww, dirt slimey rocks.
Why do they like the dirt?

Usually it's just a bad habit. You can sometimes break it by having them wear a muzzle outside with a stool guard for a while, just to get them out of the habit. Some will revert back as soon as you take it off, but others will stop completely. Worth a shot.

Mine eat dirt as if it is going out of style. I have caught at least 4 of them around a hole as if they are at a banquet. I have tried the fecal caps and it has not stopped them even with them on they have managed to scoop dirt into them. Their water containers always have mud at the bottom. We had water cooler type water bowls for them. Carry the one gallon went we go on trips.

Most of mine are digging holes and hiding behind the kitchen to eat dirt - all except Penske

They are at it again. They are eating the muddy dirt. I wonder if there is anything I can do to stop them from doing this. I have tried buring the doggie poop in the mud and mix it but they don't seem to care.
Any ideas?

same here got the same problem - I heard somewhere that if there is salt in the dirt they go after it and I know there is salt in mine as an idiot that lived here used to put salt on slugs and beer out to draw them so he could salt them. I am fairly sure my yard is loaded with salt

other animals eat dirt for minerals, its not health if they eat to much. Have you disscussed it with your vet ?
our golden swallowed a belly full of round rock almost killed him. Had to have surgery to remove all of them. What a mess he was.
Just shows they don't always know whats best for them.

I asked my vet why they eat dirt, he said it could be they're missing out on minerals in their food, like when horses lick dirt.
Gabby was outside last night, in the sleet, laying in the grass, eating dirt...I hollered for her to come in & she looked at me like, let me finish this pile of frosted dirt...aggggh

They ignore you when they eat dirt. My Vet just shrugged his shoulder. He did say that if there is salt in the dirt they will go after it. I will have to ask Dr. O'Leary a senior vet who is going to remove Jams' sutures on Wednesday.

oops
He said it was nothing really to be concerned about. We asked about minerals and such, he said it wasn't that and not really worry.

There was something in today's trib that I have to see if I can find about items that a dog eats and causes problems in the intestines.

Talked to Dr. O'Leary today about it and he said he does not know why they do it but to keep an eye on them as they had one dog that ate dirt who had e-coli they discovered it by fecal examination.

Vet thinks mine are eating dirt in our yard because of the idiot who used to live there was putting salt on snails to kill them and then putting beer down in containers to draw them out so that he could salt them.
