Full Version: The economy
xracers
Here on the spacecoast it's getting real bad. I started looking for a job ( I'm a chef by trade) and there are none. There aren't even any dishwasher jobs. The shuttle program will be ending in 2010 and there's going to be 8,000-10,000 jobs lost to that. I considered commuting to Orlando but the price of gas pretty much took that option out.

As a last ditch effort I put the trailer up for sale and planned on using the money from it to go to school to get my CDL A license and start driving a big truck. Now because of the glut of tracks closing I'm having a hard time selling the trailer.

Is it getting this bad all over the country?

i saw on the new last night that starbucks is closing 600 of their stores due to the economy

the job market here is horrid.. i started looking for a job last year on July 14th! It is now July 3rd, almost a full year later, i've had about 5 interviews in that long of a time, when i started to look for jobs the unemployment was 3.6% it is now at 6%! We have thousands of people fighting for very few jobs..

There's a line for jobs at the freaking 7-11's!

Alot of people here commute to Orlando. Now with gas at these prices they are having to get together with other commuters and share rented rooms with each other- even with the ridiculous price of housing in Orlando, if you can find 5 or 6 other people to share a place with during the work week it's cheaper than commuting. They come back here on the weekends to their families.

The housing market is terrible around here. I think they are foreclosing on more homes then they are selling. It is just terrible and it's a shame because I really like this area. It's not too overpopulated like it is in alot of other area's.

If the whole country is getting like this then we're all in for a hard time.

oh yeah its everywhere, i mean with gas prices, comes the rise of other prices, yet paychecks don't go up, if its between food or making a house payment usually people choose food... its just one big circle...

last night on the news they were also showing "the line" of how gas effects EVERYTHING.. the farmers who have to buy feed for their livestock, barrels of feed had by 50% increase... i just need to stay away from the news, it really makes me depressed

Here in MD, the people here seem to have no problem with the economy. We still have crowded highways, all the restaurants are packed. People are still heading
down the ocean and everywhere I go, I see folks spending money. Esp here in Howard County, things are busy as usual. We have lots of jobs available as I view the want ads every week. I am always looking for a new job..

We'll see how it goes here if things tend to get worse.

there are new business going up all over the place around here, yet the unemployment rate keeps growing, and some businesses are closing emo-confused013.gif

Our unemployment rate is very low. 2 homes that were for sale on our street where sold, one going for $300,000 and the other $285,000.

They were moving in yesterday. I was so mad, cause the big mover tractor trailers where blocking the road out.

I wish I could move to Maryland because I would really like to work at Headquarters for SSA. But I am stuck in PA for the rest of my work life until my husband and I retire which is not for another 30 years. I have to say the economy in PA is not that great. We just posted 30 positions where I work and I think 300 people took the test. So my life will be consumed by interviewing for at least a few weeks.

Think he needs my cast!!!
dad2paisley
I think he is well past the cast stage, more gangreen.
Beryl
okay the next step is amputation
dad2paisley
Yep, but lots of folks give him money. His container is always filled.
Redstripe
I never give "beggers" money, there was this one dude back in Chapel Hill that was always at the stop light before my work and i'd make him peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.. he was really appreciative
dad2paisley
I don't give money either. I did give a dude some fries one day.
Beryl
There was this one pan handler down down Pgh when I was going to school who used to panhandle at the bus stop. If you did not give him money or a smoke he got very beligerant. It got that I would walk blocks out of my way to another bus stop to get away from and one time another black man got on him and told him what he would do to him. He kind of quieted down after that incident
dad2paisley
We had problems with the windshield wiper folks. At red lights they would come over and say need your windshield cleaned, if you said no, that hit your car. Bunch of gang pricks.
Beryl
Don't have that around here
dad2paisley
Don't see much of that anymore but it was bad when it was in high gear.
