hi all, hubby here.
To check your version of flash, this page on adobe's website will tell you what version you are currently running:
Display Current Version of FlashAnything over 9.0.115.0, and you can't currently post high scores.
----------- ummm, no high scores for me, so now what? -----------
disclaimer:
Keeping your flash updated is important for security reasons. Most of the updates for flash are security fixes and without keeping it updated, you could be vulnerable to the internet nasties.
how explotation of flash happens:
What generally occurs is that a website owner contracts w/ an advertising firm to put revolving ads on their site. These ads use the flash technology to be more, well, flashy.
The problem happens when the advertising company doesn't screen the ads they are revolving properly, and display an ad that has malicious code in it. When this ad is displayed in your browser (and you have flash enabled by default), the malicious ad infects your machine through a security hole in your old version of flash. (This is just one example of the far too many methods of infection. Hence the spyware epidemic.)
The concept of updating flash is to patch all the holes, then the attack vector is minimized and the malicious code can't infect your machine.
----------- blah, blah, blah, i just want to beat gennygrey at tetris -----------
Ok, with all that being said, heres a few ways to fix it:
------------------------ (My Slipper Method) ------------------------
Uninstall your current version of flash, then install version 8.
Steps:
(please read these all before starting, and don't start unless you feel you can perform them all)
1) Download this to uninstall your current version:
(click run if your prompted to save or open)
Flash Uninstaller2) Follow the instructions in the uninstaller (simple).
** at this point, flash is gone **
2) Download v8 and save it to your desktop:
(click save if your prompted to save or open, then save to your desktop)
Download Flash Version 83) Unzip the "fp8_archive.zip" file you just saved on your desktop.
(in XP just right click it and click 'extract all', then just keep clicking next, then finish)
4) Open the new folder named "fp8_archive" on your desktop, and then open the subfolder named "r42".
5) Install this version by double clicking the correct installer for your brower.
(if you use internet explorer, use the installer named: "flashplayer8r42_winax.exe
")
(if you use firefox/flock/etc.., use the installer named: "flashplayer8r42_win.exe")
------------------------ (Steak Method) ------------------------
The problem on the server is fixed so that as people update to the newer versions of flash, the arcade scores still work.
Pros:
Problem solved!
Cons:
It probably costs EG money.
------------------------ (Rawhide Method) ------------------------
Replace internet explorer with firefox 3, install the flashblock extension, and configure it so it blocks flash on all websites except the ones you trust it on. Then install version 8 of flash and don't update it.
Pros:
Works fine. This is what i did.
Cons:
Requires a fair amount of time, effort, and geekiness.
------------------------ Whew. ------------------------
Don't you just love computers?
