Full Version: Fleas!
Redstripe
many places aren't carrying frontline anymore, i've read that fleas are becoming resistant to it and now i have my proof, all my critters have fleas and are on frontline!

My vet is now carrying Vectra 3D, which i have read not so good things about when it comes to greyhounds...

anyone tried Vectra 3D? and i'm also thinking about K9 advantage? so any input on those two products will be greatly appreciated!
Beryl
Have not tried any of them - I use biospot and so far no problems. I was told by a breeder about biospot after a tick infestation and then found out from the vet that a lot of dogs were infested with ticks even tho they were on the prescription meds for flea/ticks. Biospot is also good for mosquitoes.

i just looked up biospot.. it has Permethrin in it which isn't recommended for greys, which is why k9 advantix isn't recommended for greys.... vectra 3d has Permethrin in it too, and i have read so much about greys getting lathargic, vomiting, and have the Big D on it...

this is too complicated!!! it works for some people, it doesn't work for some people... AAHHHH!!!
Beryl
have been using it for a few years and have had not problems with it even on the old gal Softee. It was a gh breeder that told me to use it.
Redstripe
i think i'll probably end up going with K9 advantage

what a day an its only 2:30!! after checking with 5 vets, 3 pet stores, i finally found a place that carries K9 advantage (petsmart banfield), the cats are going to start on revolution, and i'll apply treaments tomorrow evening... everyone got a capstar and a bath today...

and did you know that bathing cats is a workout from HELL!!!??? my heart is still pumping, my bathroom is covered in flea shampoo, i had to chase Racey all around the bathroom, i lost my grip when rinsing and he TOOK OFF! i felt like i was on animal rescue trying to capture a feral cat stuck in someone's house  i need a vacation!

i couldn't afford any carpet stuff so that's going to have to wait until next week..
Beryl
There is another post there about using household items for the carpet and it is the same one with the baby powder. Maybe if you do a search with Lavender Baby Powder you will find it.

I know about bathing cats - I have had quite a few scratches and even bites off of the little buggers.

edit
When this storm passes I will try and find it for you

I am with Beryl and use Biospot. I have used Biospot on my greyhound for the past 2 months and no problems. He has not had any adverse reactions or the big D. My adoption group is a big advocate of Biospot for protection and cost. I spoke with my vet and she stated that any dog can have a different reaction to the chemicals that they put in flea and tick medication. She also told me that just because one brand is more expensive does not mean that it provides better protection. As for K-9 Advantix my dad uses it on his mutt and has had no problems with this medication or skin reactions. I am not sure if you have just used Frontline, but there is Frontline Plus and you can get it on the Internet anywhere and it works really well.

Hannah read this from GT

We have been using biospot for over 3 years and not problems

guess some just react in different ways! we'll see how this works

i used frontline plus before, and it stopped working, worked well for almost 2 years, not anymore
Beryl
Hannah when there was an epidemic of ticks up here not of the meds worked, My vets office told me that they were bringing in dogs left and right with ticks and they were all on the RX meds. So it is possible there is an epidemic of flea infestation. The biospot got rid of my ticks when I was infested. If you want to get it you can get it at any pet store or on line at KV Vet it is much cheaper and the do have it for cats also.

Do you have the flea problem under control ?
Redstripe
yup! kitties' on revolution, Al on advantage, and the apartment treated with sentry!
graytdog
Glad to hear you have it under control. Keeping fingers crossed for you. We use program and it has seemed to work for my Lab for 6 years and Ty for almost 3. (I have yet to find biospot here yet).

I found some biospot but it was expensive compared to what i used, i just coldn't afford it!
Beryl

Thats Great Hannah , I'm glad you found some thing that works. emo-bighead.gif
Beryl
i hate fleas and ticks so what ever works
Pipi5
I have Terminix spray my yard and around the house every 3 months...that gets rid of the ones that were outside. Then the other day, I noticed Pipi itching, did a good check on her & there it was, a huge flea. I had 1 Frontline left in the refrigerator so I put it on her, no one else had any. That one dose of Frontline just on Pipi did the trick. Its worth having Terminix come out & spray.

i live in an apartment.. no yard to spray!
