Full Version: Serious Situation-Please Help!!!

I have bad news, Jackson my mutt is having a very bad temperment change. He has been deficating in the house, growling at me, the husband, my daughter, and the greyhound (Shadow). Instead of him playing with Shadow, he is now biting at him aggressively and more than just play. At first Shadow took it, but now he is getting aggressive back at him because he is inflicting pain. Shadow has even been protecting Ashley from Jackson. For the past few weeks, he is growling at neighbors on the street, and barks at everyone. He used to be calm and laid back, now he is aggressive and quick to loose it. There really has been no change in his daily routine, but I changed his diet in June when I got Shadow. He is on Eagle Pack with Shadow. My husband is not sure why he has become destructive to our house. He is chewing all of my daughters things and constantly having accidents while we are home. I am concerned for Shadow because greyhounds have thin skin and cannot tolerate really rough play. My husband is very upset that he is ruining the house. He caused immense damage to our hardwood floors and carpets. He used to have a few destructive days here and there, but now is having them daily. He even is becoming a little too rough with Ashley. What should I do?

here's my unprofessional thought!

I've heard of dogs getting more aggressive if they are sick or hurt, they kinda "man" up so they don't show any weakness...

Maybe he is hurt that Shadow is here? I am really not sure what caused this, but my husband and I definetly need to remedy the situation before someone gets hurt.

RS means that he might be hurt, like in pain. Pain can make a dog do weird things. Something could possibly be wrong inside. He might need to see a vet.

First is a quick trip to the vet to make sure there is nothing physically wrong. That kind of change in behavior is/could be a sign of illness. You also dont say how old he is. Is he aging now and might be that his vision is somewhat impaired, hence the snarly behavior might be he is protecting himself.

He just turned 1 year old on 7/15. He is eating and drinking okay. I can have him checked at the vet, but if all checks out, which I am thinking that it will, it comes down to a behavioral issue. I am really not sure what to do. I will call the vet and see when I can get him in.

If it is a behavioral issue, talk with your vet, maybe he/she has some suggestions or at least someone in the area you can talk to.

Its a good idea to make a vet appointment. A friend of my has a doberman and when she found her pit bull, in alley, with a broken leg and on death's bed, she took him in to her home Marco was not happy and started acting up, destroying everything, it turns out that Marco has a thyroid problem and now is on medication and everything is fine, oh and Marco was 8 years old when this started. Good luck and don't give up.

Sounds to me like he is trying to take over as pack leader at your house. I had problems like this before at my house. You have to show them their place in the pack or it will get worse.
