Due to a “mild case of kennel cough” circulating at Derby Lane the management has imposed a self-quarantine on the kennel compound, officials said Monday. The quarantine started this morning (June 26). According to the track veterinarian the Greyhounds are being monitored closely. The current symptoms appear to be those related to the typical cough experienced when new Greyhounds are mixed with existing racers.

“It's similar to the new kid in daycare catching a bug,” said track spokeswoman Vera Filipelli. “We booked three new kennels and other Greyhounds have arrived in the past two weeks from several farms and tracks across America.”

Filipelli added that the Greyhounds arrived for the new year-round meet that starts July 2, and insists that the quarantine is a precautionary measure.

No new Greyhounds will be allowed in and no Greyhounds will be allowed off the track property unless under veterinary care until further notice.

“Based on the information we have today, we are not expecting the quarantine to last very long,” said Filipelli. “We just want to take every precaution.”

The racing office urges all Greyhound haulers to contact the track before any transportation is scheduled to avoid being turned away.
