Full Version: Greyound Adoption with Children
dad2paisley
What are your thoughts on adopting out a greyhound to a family with small children? Does your adoption group allow this? Why not if they don't.

We adopt to families with small children. There is that small percentage of those adopters that turn out to be to irresponsible to have both small children and greyhounds. However, our statistics show that there is a much larger number of responsible greyhound owners with little kids. I refuse to punish the future of greyhound adoption, the kids in responsible homes, for those people who should not have anything that is alive in their home, dogs or kids.

Depends on the dog. I think it is wise for groups to take every precaution they can to ensure that a suitable dog is placed in a home with small children. I believe my group handles it case by case. Obviously, some children are not suitable for any dog and it's the adoption group's responsibility to recognize that, if the signs are there.

Most of all the adoption groups I have dealings with know that any of my dogs from my kennel are all ages kid friendly so if they have a family with small childern apply ... they can see if my babies fit in with the family.. I guess thats one reason most of mine go fast as my human kids play with my 4 legged kids to get them use to noises and pulling and tugging

We helped out a few groups in our area. It is really interesting on how different groups work. I won't mention their names but one group adopted no dogs to people with small children, no fenced yard or even if they had a small dog or cats. One other group, let the dogs pick their family to see which one would fit. We don't really help those groups anymore in our local area.
We help out Greyhound Angels and they are great.

i think that kind of adoption group is |3|_|LL$|-||T, they wouldn't have adopted out to me, i have cats and no fenced in yard... aren't adoption groups suppose to ADOPT out dogs?! like someone mentioned already, depends on the dog, and the family...

kinda sucks that some adoption groups pass up on great homes for dogs like that, and i bet people there are AR because of so many greys up for adoption... well adopt them out and maybe we wouldn't have that problem...

Yes there are groups like that and I also know of one. The will do non fenced yards if you promised to leash walk them. If the adults are responsible and their kids are not wild why not adopt a greyhound with small children. When we go our first my 18 month old grandson came twice/week and our Shadow decided he was her baby and was with him constantly. One time would not let his mom pick him up. She stood in front of him everytime she reached for him.

Our group keeps an open mind when it comes to children and fenced yards. We attach an addendum for children, and when we do the home visit, we talk to the parents in great lenght about greyhounds and children. We have reading on our website to help new adopters as well. The home visit usually lets us know if having a greyhound in a home with small children will work. Same with not having a fence. We have to know they will be commited to walking their grey in all kinds of weather.

Our home eval people pay attention to the parent/child relationship. If the kids are allowed to be wild we will not adopt. We still have returns with some wonderful dogs who reached their limit with one of the kids and simply placed that dog with a non child household. No fence is not a problem. Wanna know what is with our group? Invisable fences!
We will not place a dog with anyone who uses this. Does not work for greys. We know of a grey placed by another group who was so traumatised by the repeated shocks that she refused to go into her back yard and became so stressed that she acted out on her human mom.

The group we got Ty from has no hard and fast rule about children or fences ... thank goodness cause we have kids and no fence. But the coordinator is very good at knowing and reading people and can tell what dogs will work in what homes.

I believe GHG does not adopt to families with kids under 2 will have to check that out. No fences as long as you are willing to walk them
