Full Version: Pray for our Puppy
myfiveboys
We got in a 12 week old greyhound puppy that had a previous leg break when he was 3 days old. Well, he wasn't given any medical attention and by the time we got him in our program, his leg had started to heal incorrectly. Unfortunately, Zach's break involves a growth plate. He has now been evaluated by four different vets and specialists. (I guess I was looking for a miracle cure for him.) His latest evaluation was the same. If we go for surgery to correct his leg, then he has to have at least three separate surgeries. Two now and one once he stops growing. There is a lot of pain and down time involved and he would be on medications throughout his entire puppyhood. The kicker is that after all this there is no guarantee that he will be able to keep the leg. So, after consulting with his future family, our agency has decided to amputate his leg. What kills me is that if he had a splint placed on his leg at the time of the break, he would have full use of his leg.

We are scheduling the surgery this week. I know that he will be okay. He hardly uses the leg now and gets up on three. He is young and the last vet told us that he would recover from the surgery within days.

This is the hardest decision I ever had to make. Please pray for little Zack. He is such a good boy and deserves only the best.

Good Luck with everything! i have yet to see having a leg amputated slow down such a young pup, even older ones!
Prayers and thoughts are with you and all during the surgery and recovery period.

Amputations, particularly in such a young dog, are generally much harder on the humans making the decision than they are on the dog himself.

Hope the surgery goes well!

Many prayers for Zach. Here's a picture of the sweet boy with Bear and Gabby. Zach is the bigger black boy. I'm sure he's grown, this was taken in May when we picked up Bear at the kennel.

He really is a sweetheart! I was amazed how well he got around when I came up to meet him. It is pretty amazing how well they bounce back. I know it was a hard decision to make but I know in my heart you made the right decision Lisa. Zack will be just fine, better then fine once he heals from his surgery.
