My husband and I were sitting at the dining room table tonight, having a pleasant chat, when he glanced down at Jack, and sees blood everywhere! The pup hadn't made a sound, just trotted into the house, leaving a trail of blood from the back door, through the kitchen, around the table, and up to my husband. He'd sliced the skin between two toes on one of his back paws. Still haven't figured out where or how. Of course, this happens at 6:10pm, and my vet closes at 6:00pm. I call anyway, but can't get anyone. I try the after hours vet number but can't get through, so we drive over. Turns out my vet is the vet on call tonight, but she's not available - she's doing emergency surgery on a REINDEER!
She did call me to find out what was wrong, and to tell me what to do for Jack until we could get him in in the morning.
So, if Santa's sleigh is a deer short this year, you can blame Jack and his messed up foot for interrupting the surgery.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and wishes, everyone!
We just got back from the vet's (and a little running around after), and he's going to be fine. She said we did exactly what we needed to last night. Got some antibiotics and Rimadyl for the next few days, plus she gave us extra of both for our camping first aid kit.
Jack should heal up just fine, and be back to harassing the kitties in no time.

Why is it they always manage to get hurt/sick when the vet is closed? Our gang does that also and you do go into panic mode. Good news about your boy and hope he gets well soon.

It's ALWAYS when they're closed

. I used to think it was because that's when I'm home with them and that's when they have the most freedom - y'know, after work, on the weekends, etc. But they never seem to have any incidents when I take vacation, or sick days, or just random days off. Oh no, it's got to be after six at night, or Sunday afternoon, without fail.

Happy to hear Jack is fine. Always remember your general first aid and never panic. My first Whippet always managed to pick a fight with my first Greyhound - guess who wound up in surgery all the time. The last time it happened was on a Sunday night so I cleaned the wound, used a sanitary napkin as a bandage and wrapped it up. 7 a.m. I'm at my vet with the patient.
