Full Version: Autographs.
Patricia
What do you think. Should sports stars and celebrities charge money for an autograph? I heard that some sport figures will charge $100.00. Some say they charge because they don't want their autograph being sold on e-bay. What do you think and would you pay for someone's autograph?

ahhh yes... another post where i can say the phrase, "this world we live in".....

40 years ago, an autograph was a memory. today, more often than not, it is a price tag.

I absolutely despise most sports figures just because of the abuse of the position they hold.

They are role models, and they know this when the come into the sport. They know that everything they do while be seen and documented, so they should be on their best behavior. Its just part of the game.

But i digress, im off topic.

NO, i dont think they should charge for it, i think that is THEIR OWN GREED getting in the way of the small percent of people who want a memory because most of the autographs do get sold on ebay. WIth sports figures doing this, it only drives the price higher for those auctions, so really, they arent curtailing the ebay sales, just making the people that want the autographs pay more for them.

I'm going to chime in and disagree.

I wouldn't pay for someone's autograph, but I figure it's none of my business if someone else wants to. To quote P. T. Barnum, "There's a sucker born every minute."

There are a lot of players out there that are still signing for free, thank goodness.

And a bit in defense of the players who charge, I have a friend who's a pitching coach for a pro team and he won't ask the players for autographs for friends or himself. There are so many people working with these players who do, then turn around and sell the signed items. The players, in general, don't care about Joe Blow who gets a signed item, then sometime down the road sells it. They have issue with the people who make a business out of it and don't pay licensing fees or do any of the other stuff you're supposed to do when dealing in sports memorabilia, or, as I mentioned above, the people who play on their "friendship" to make a buck.

Now, for those that are doing it for cash, and cash alone, well, I hope they make enough to offset the pain of the horrendous carpel tunnel syndrome they must give themselves.

alot of celebrities donate alot of money to charities ( not all of 'em, but many do ) and if someone wants to charge for an autograph and someone is willing to pay then its their business...
