Full Version: Belle in Hospital
Beryl
Just back from the Vets Belle is having surgery to repair a boo boo which we do not know who did. There was a barking confrontation and Dave was trying to get Belle outside when all hell broke loose. Finally got Belle outside and got Hershey and Koolaid back in the living room. Checked for boo boos and discovered Belle had one that needed surgery it looks like a flap tear which is at least 3 x 3 inches. Will call the vet in about an hour to see how she is doing and when we can pick her up . I guess Daddy has to call off work again. Won't hurt him as where he works is not air conditioned...
dad2paisley
Hope Belle is ok. emo-angelic001.gif
Beryl
Just off the phone with the vet's office. Surgery went well and she is standing up. We can pick her up at 4:45 pm EST.

Oh poor Belle. I am glad that you can pick her up so quickly. Praying that she heals quickly and with no problems.

poor girl, glad you get to pick her up so soon, best wishes!
Beryl
Just got in the door - Vet said it was not an injury that one of the houndies did. It was a clean one. He has her sutured and we have to watch the top for any trouble (drying out or turning black) then we have to get her back to him. She will return in 2 weeks for suture removal. Not sure how many sutures she has will try and check later. Will try and get a picture of it also. She is on 250 mg of Keflex 3/day for 1 week. We are going to try and crate her if she tolerates it. emo-tn_greyhound002.gif

glad she's home!

Yes so are we. I like this vet hospital as they try not to have them stay over night. I do not like my fur kids staying overnight when I know there is no one on site so we try to get them out ASAP.

So glad things went well and Belle is back home.

They told us that when she was waking up from the anesthesia her legs were moving as if she was running. I wonder if she won that race? The also said she was a sweet and a good dog (yep when she is sleeping). When we were leaving the vet that operated on her was in the office and she pulled me into the area where he was so she could get more petting off of him just like he was doing to her when he explained what he had done and about her antibiotic and when to return for suture removal...
Patricia
Poor Belle. I'm glad she is home.

Dear Belle,
My new friend got hurt and I wasn't there to hold her paw. I am so sorry I just was able to get to the computer and this is the first thing that I saw. You will have to leave those stitches alone or you will be in big trouble and might end up back at the needle doctor's again. I will check on you tomorrow and see how you re doing. My paws are crossed that you will be completely new in a few days. Love, Willow

Willow

Belle has asked me to thank you for your kind words and wishes with her boo boo she cannot get on the computer. We are trying to keep her calm and right now she is in her crate. She is still woozy from her anesthesia and we figure she will be safer crated.

Love

Auntie Beryl & Uncle Dave
Beryl
Belle had a greyt night and seems to be okay. Dave walked her upstairs to bed and of course crated her (have been crating her at night and when we are not home due to the seizure she had) and is not crying from pain. The area is swollen and bruised but looks clean. She ate about 1//3 of her normal feeding last night (re vet did not want her getting sick due to anesthesia) and tolerated it. We have removed her pool we do not need her getting an infection even though she layed in it yesterday right after the accident before we left for the vet.
Will update when ever possible
Beryl
Took pics of Belle's boo boo and we think we found out where she did it. It was on a box near the back door. Box has been moved.

Awww. Poor Belle! That's a nasty boo boo. I would have been beside myself if I had seen a wound like that on my Reebok! Hugs to you and Belle.

Suzy should meet Belle. Suzy had a similar boo boo a few months back. Looks like in the same area.

What did she run in to? We figured out a carboard box for Belle.
dad2paisley
We don't know, they were all running and then she came back to the door and she was bleeding. Possibly a stick flew and hit her? We still don't know actually what happened. She still wanted to play even though she was bleeding.
Beryl
It took us a while to figure it out and I just sat and visualize what went down. I remembered her turning and then I looked at the one box on the chair and it looked it had blood on it. There was hardly any bleeding with this injury

Oh my it is worse than I had imagined!!!!!!!Harley got one of those the size of a silver dollar right after we adopted him, I felt sooo bad because they had to cut away skin so that it would heal with the stitches. Belle it is in a good place so that mom didn't have to put one of those lampshades on you. That's the good news. The bad news is that mom had to take your pool away til it heals. That's ok you can still play with your duckie. LOLOVE, Auntie Peggy

Just about the same place as Belles' and Suzy is the same color. How old is she?

Beryl
Vet said and of course we know it is their thin skin.
dad2paisley
Suzy is 7.
Beryl
knew she was older than belle with they grey muzzle. Now I know what Belle will look like at 7
Patricia
I hope she is feeling better.
liza
Holy cow! I'm glad Belle's all fixed up now.
Beryl
Still have to watch it for dryness or turning black he is not 100% sure of the blood flow to the top of the boo boo
Beryl
Checked her boo boo (OWIE) this am and looks good don't see any dryness or it turning black. It is not keeping her off the stairs as everytime mommy goes up Belle has to she love sleeping in our bed and with all the thunder going on is sleeping like a baby. I feel bad for her as we have taken her pool down and it is so hot.
Beryl
Had to take Belle to the ER. She got into a fight with Koolaid and Hershey. It seems as if Ms Belle has the brunt of injuries and Koolaid has one on her neck. Bell's owie lost three sutures and we called our not knowing about the other injury she had on her leg. We only saw a couple of small areas that were bleeding that we cleaned up. She is on two new medications and rimadyl. One is an antibiotic and another pain med. Also found out that the Owie is infected. When we called about the sutures the vet said to bring her in NPO Monday morning for more surgery. I wonder if he will do anything with it infected or will he wait for the infection to clear up. We also have to do warm compresses and I can use a warm betadine solution. Her medication is downstairs will let you know what she is on later

They want her crated with an e-collar there is no way she would be able to be in the crate with that collar on and our crate is one of the bigest ones they make. She would not even be able to lie down and would only be able to be in one position standing. I wish some of them would use their head.

could you try a muzzle? i know the muzzle in itself could upset the wound but its worth a shot...e-collars on greys don't work anyway, well, it didn't work on Al, he figured out a way to get to his wound one way or another... maybe vet wrap with bitter apple on the wrap? that's what we use to use at work and for most it seemed to help... or not, because most wounds need the air.. i don't know good luck with whatever you decide!

We had a muzzle on her with the original wound and I think that might of agravated it and maybe caused the infection. I know about e-collars with Hershey she managed to get out sutures after a spaying and when they had to spay her the second time (yes I said spay the second time) she got the sutures out so bad that the vet had to leave a pool party and come into the office in his swim trunks on a Sunday to re suture her. Right now she is crated and not giving us any problems going into the crate and she is roaching so I hope that is a good sign. emo-angelic001.gif that tomorrow will go off okay
Beryl
Oh, forgot to tell you checked out Koolaid's boo boo and it looks good, put warm compress on it and re bandaged with more antibiotic ointment which I have done before for this demon child. Hershey the big mouth instigator no problems I think she is too fast for anyone to nip her.
Patricia
Poor little girl, I hope she is doing better.

I hope both your babies heal quickly and without any more problems. Sending hugs and happy thoughts your way.

Just returned from dropping Belle off at the vet - he wanted to know if she was the victim or the attacker I told him both. He is not putting her under totally to do the repair work. We have to call at 11:30 am Pittsburgh time to check on her and see when we can get her. It is about a 45 minute highway drive away from us. emo-angelic001.gif all goes well

Beryl
Thanks D2P we are also praying that all goes well and no more trips except for suture removal/check ups
Beryl
Belle did well and we can pick her up around 2 pm Pittsburgh time more when we get her home.
dad2paisley
That is great news.
Beryl
leaving to get Belle in five minutes I am doing a count down now
Beryl
Got home about 3 pm Pittsburgh time, she has an e-collar on and is crated. Dave is planning to take her to work with him starting tomorrow. It is big enough for him to take the crate from the bedroom and I know she will be spoiled rotten. It will be a good place for her and will be getting a lot of prayers from all that attend the Church. Her next appointment is September 1. The original owiee was not infected maybe the meds kicked in but one of the bites was. He has sutured and cleaned up all boo boos and she seems okay. Came up the outside steps with no problem. Did not have general anesthesia but sedation and a local she is a drunken sailor. Will get new pictures as soon as I charge the camera.
dad2paisley
Glad she is home and doing good.
Patricia
Glad she is home. biggrin.gif
Beryl
Yes so are we. She did eat a little around 7 pm and has been drinking water. She is doing a lot of sleeping and we will try and feed her again around 11 pm. She will be kept downstairs in her crate again tonight.
Beryl
My pictures dissapeared GRRRRRRRRRRR
Redstripe
she doesn't look too unhappy in the crate! so everything is healing up ok?
Beryl
Seems to be - she is testing us tho with feeding and of course we are catering to her.
Beryl
If you noticed on her picture of her boo boo there is a red area that looks as if it is bleeding I spoke to the vet and he said not to worry about that he was expecting some drainage and unless it looks infected or smells not to worry.
Redstripe
i'm so glad she's doing well

here's to a speedy recovery emo-eatdrink052.gif
Beryl
Yes she is realy perky and Dave will take her with him to work for the time being. He caries a small cooler with her food in it so he can feed her at 7 pm or so and give her the medication. Gave him a hard time this am taking her antibiotic and pain med. Finally got the antiobiotic down but not the pain med. I am more concerned about the antibiotic as she is not acting like she has pain..Her tail was going 90 miles an hr when Dave put her leash on and jumping like crazy.

We do not think she is in too much pain the way she is bouncing around and the tail going 90 miles an hour and her tail is not tucked only when we are trying to give her medication. No crying or whimpering As you can see the crate is big enough for her.

Willow Belle has asked me to thank you for all for kind words and crossed paws.

Ms Belle is being very bratty - she whines and cries if no one (human) is close by - never did that before. She is giving us a hard time with her meals and has been trying to bury them or spill them all over the place. If any of the other fur kids get too near her crate she will either growl or bark at them sometime both. Spills her water bowl and in general is being a brat. emo-th_headbangwall.gif
Beryl
emo-th_headbangwall.gif Discovered she lost some sutures and has an open area about the size of a quarter. Don't lnow what happened as she is crated 24/7 and wearing her collar. She is alone for potty and when out of her crate is alone. Vet said do not worry but to watch it and keep it clean and of course watch for infection.

She is giving her dad a rough time at work she will not eat or potty for him but as she as she comes home will. She is enjoying all the attention and all the visitors she receives. Dave said that everyone that works at the church has to stop in and see her. Spoiled brat.....

she can't get to her stitches with that collar on. Vet said this happens from time to time from use.
PeggysGreytKidz
She looks so happy in that collar, is she trying out for the modeling job?? She could be their spokeshound. Peggy
Beryl
Well Peggy she did model for the auction for the racing muzzle. Wonder if we can get her to earn some money to pay her vet bills!!!!!
BlackStar Rising
Belle does look pretty happy in the e-collar but, if it starts to bother her, an alternative is to use her muzzle with a stool-guard insert to keep her from licking. Most greys are pretty comfy with their muzzles and the e-collars can scare them... although she sure doesn't look very scared!! laugh.gif

Would be afraid to use the muzzle with stool guard right now as she does have an open spot about the size of a quarter and could easily rub it and make it worse or really get it infected. We only have to go until September 1 for Vet appt. and suture removal..
