Some facts to know about joint supplements.
all this info has been at www.greyhoundgang.org for
many years.

1. A greyhound needs 1500 - 2000 mg a day of
glucosamine. The
Puritan product mentioned recently has 500 in a pill. so you would need to give 3-4
pills.

Glucosamine is the foundation. Then if a dog (or
person) needs it -chondroitin
(in bovine or shark cartilage form) and MSM. Some
studies show that chondroitin, when combined with glucosamine, helps.
MSM is a natural anti-inflammatory, and can also be helpful when combined with glucosamine. Some
studies feel that Vitamin C is also needed.

2.Not all products are created equal, as there are
no standards for manufacture. Before I found my supplier for Get Up & Go (who supplied Trader Joes with their supplements), i was buying glucosamine products from
Costco and Health Food Stores. I had varying results with
different products.
For instance, Schiff did nothing. So if one product, after a
month, has produced no results, and you are giving the correct dose, then try a different product.

3. Make sure you feel good about the supplier. Products should be tested and well labeled with all ingredients in the bottle.
again, not all products are created equal. Also - human and dog joint supplements are exactly the same
product, just marketed differently.

4. Chondroitin is the most expensive of the supplements - whether bovine or shark. My chondroitin costs me 5 times more than my glucosamine. And i don't get the most expensive out there. There are studies that say it does nothing,
as well as studies that say it is important. I'd be wary about
products containing chondroitin that are very inexpensive. My guess would be that the chondroitin is not a very high quality product.

I've found that depending on the dog, and their individual arthritic issues, sometimes just glucosamine is enough toaffect change. Whole Dog Journal wrote about this too.
Just in case you are looking for supplements to help
your hounds - and I've found that joint supplements are very helpful for hounds - Greyhound Gang offers supplements with proceeds helping to pay the bills at www.almosthomeforhounds.org. One 2 month supply ofglucosamine hcl is only $14.95.

We always stop by and buy some from her at Dewey.

I wish Claudia would join EG. I have invited her but no response. If anyone knows her and wouln't mind mentioning EG, we love to have her here. She would be another valuable resource for us.

I've been using glucosamine from the greyhoundgang for a little while now, and it works great on our senior brood mama. When we first adopted Rachel back in mid-April, her hind end was a little on the wobbly side, and she was stiff when she'd get up from her bed. She had a great career at the track. But all that had taken a toll on her.

Now, no wobble butt, no stiffness. She's the fastest of all my hounds.

I'm looking forward to meeting Claudia at Dewey, and will continue to get her products.

I use human grade glucosamine w/chondritin & MSM for both grey and Lab(breed common hip & joint problems so I figure get it before it is a problem). Ty had an issue with stiff toes (odd I know) and when you would wipe his feet they would crack ... took me about 3 months to get used to it. But within 2 weeks of putting him on the above mentioned he had no more cracking in toes.

We use GlucoFlex III and buy if from KV Vet Supply which you can check out on line. I get a lot of my meds through them including my Heart Guard and even Keflex so that I have it if I need it. they have a lot of prescription drugs and OTC including rimadyl. Check out some of their prices. Fish oil we get at Walmart..

Thanks D2P, by the time Dewey rolls around, we'll need more, so we'll wait till then also.

She would be a great asset to this group. Maybe we can talk her into it at Dewey.
