Full Version: GUR Help

Sometimes I can't find anyone to go with on the longer GUR's and I was wondering if anyone in the VA, MD or PA region would be willing to meet and drive with me to finish off the trips. This would also enable the Orlando groups that I work with to get dogs further north which would really be a big help to the dogs.

Basically I'm looking for someone to join me somewhere on I 95 to help me drive my truck and a ten hole dog trailer- I'll do most of the driving.

I turn around and head right back to FL after the last stop, so, it should not be more than 12 hours of your time.

There is some pay but it's pretty much next to nothing. The last run I did to Philly I got 35 bucks and dinner at Denny's. I also got to help 16 dogs get out of FL to loving homes, got to eat fresh Tastykakes, saw sights that I've never seen before and met some greyt greyhound people.

Anyone interested? emo-ghrock.jpg

Between my job at the college, my grandma duties, wifely responsibilities and all the fosters coming and going (oops, forgot about my collar making) - this is not something that I can do. But for anyone who is considering it - Pat is a retired dog trainer who knows this business inside out. She is a wonderful lady, with a great sense of humor and I know that you will have a good time riding along and talking about hounds. Pat is the only hauler that I've ever met who had "special" dogs up front in the cab of the truck with her. <g>

I would love to come along. I probably couldn't drive but would love to help as long as it's on one of my days off of work. You wouldn't have to pay me anything. I am in MD.

Thanks Judi.

All I do is talk greyhounds- racing and retired. I eat, drink and sleep greyhounds. I have stories about greyhounds that will make you laugh, cry and foster. I work with many groups in Orlando, help Daytona and Melbourne on occasion.

I met Judi on one of the runs and she was picking up dogs from me and taking them to other groups. One of the boys was soooooo spooky that he came with the warning that it would be dangerous to even try to walk him and that he would be fretting something fierce if he rode in the trailer, so he and another girl rode in the cab with me.

Thinking that it would be to much of a risk to walk him where I met Judi, I called the group that sent him and they asked if he had gone potty in the truck with me. I told them I thought he did, so, we decided it would be better to just carry him to Judi's SUV rather than risking him freaking and getting loose.

As I'm explaining this to Judi, carrying him and walking to her car, he proceeds to "relieve" himself on me. I stood there going " well might as well let him finish"- we all got a good laugh out of that one.

The runs are usually on weekends and always interesting. biggrin.gif

I think you might be just what Pat is looking for - she is coming from Florida with a load of dogs going to VA or MD or NY...

When you say truck, do you mean pickup or semi? I can drive a pickup (I tow my travel trailer regularly) but not a semi unless I could be easily trained and don't need a special license. Anyway, right now I'm on the west coast, but when I visit Maryland I'd love to help out. I enjoy helping the hounds, and would be glad to keep you company. I'll be out east for Dewey Beach, but unfortunately probably won't have enough spare time for a run, since I'm flying out to vend there. wink.gif

It's a pick up truck. When the dogtrailer is hooked up, it's just like towing a travel trailer.

When it's not too hot or too cold out and you have the trailer's door vents open all the way, it's a whole different driving experience. The people driving on the road can get a good look at the dogs inside the trailer. They'll come flying down the interstate to catch up to the trailer to look inside. You think someone is going to pass you and they pull up alongside to look in at the dogs. They'll even follow you when you stop to get gas so they can look inside and ask questions. I always carry adoption literature with so they can get in touch with a group in their area for more info on adopting.

And then there's the people that just have to bark at the dogs when you're sitting at a stoplight- they always crack me up. It's never the kids that are in the car- it's the adults- they just gotta bark! biggrin.gif

Home is in Nevada, but I've done a few long hauls from the Midwest to the West but that was always in my own van. Wish I could help out here. smile.gif

I'm in the Memphis area, or I'd jump in there. I don't do GUR's because my car is 10 yrs old & some times she's on her last tire.
I've done a few GURs and they are so rewarding...
