Koolaid every so often sound like a drunk who is barfing. I am wonder do dogs get hairballs like cats? We used to run to see what is going on but she never brings anything up. It is the most horrible sound and she does have that real soft white fur. That is why I was wondering if it could be a hair ball or just hair. We can brush her and do her again 1/2 hour later and still get more fur off of her.

Mine will do that to. Sometimes when I'm on the computer, I'll have one of my girls come in and lay down behind the chair without me knowing it. All of a sudden I hear that awful sound, and I think she's thrown up on the carpet. But no, it's just a throat cough/hacking/gagging sound. I don't know why they do it, but I don't worry any more.

My greys haven't done that (yet), but my older husky would do it on occasion. I always thought is was a tickle in the back of her throat, or something a little bit stuck (like a piece of grass or hair). She'd also do it when she thought there was something interesting outside, but I didn't want to let her out. She'd start with the retching and gagging, like she was going to power puke all over, so I'd rush her outside, and it would miraculously stop. Smart, manipulative dog...

Some of our cats have done this. You think they threw up a hairball, when you go check, there is nothing there. Our pups haven't done this.

Okay so it is nothing to get STRESSED out about. She does it so loud that if I am upstairs at the computer and she is in the living room I have rushed downstairs to see if she has thrown up. I was ready to take her to the vet to see if there was something in her throat..

How often is this happening? If it's not constantly, I wouldn't worry about it. I've always viewed it just like if we had an irritation in our throat.
If it is all the time - maybe daily, or more than once a day - I'd have a vet look at her. There could be something in her throat that she can't shake loose.

Sounds like hair in the throat to me. But if you're really worried (and she'll let you

) grab a flashlight and take a look down her throat and see what you can see. I'm always nosy with my critters - poking and prodding - not that it does me any good since most of the time I don't know what I'm looking at, but it makes me feel better

Will try the flashlight bit but I doubt if she will let me as she is the one that goes around all day long whinny whining like a little old lady.

Ty does it it too once in awhile ... but being the drama king he is he wants everyone to be watching so he will come and find you then stand in front of you and do it. I have checked a couple of times ... a piece of grass, hair, or fuzzies off toys (tennis balls) that's when I know to do a "safety check" on their toys LOL.

Next time she does it we will have to do a check on her throat if the drama queen will let us. She does yelp at the slightest things...

Beryl, that's exactly how Gracie is. She is the biggest drama queen, you even look at her wrong, she screams. She's our gagger to. When you first posted this, when we went to bed, she was up laying on the floor in the bedroom, doing her throat clearing. But she's always done that, and the vet gave her an aok on her check up this past week. So, I can't figure it out.

Koolaid does go around most of the day moaning and there is nothing wrong with her plus talk about Drama touch her the wrong way and she screams. Once when we were trying to crate her in an airline type crate I though I would have ASPCA and Childrens'Service here she screamed so much.

I know what you mean, when we first got Gracie, all we had to do was touch her and GSOD! We thought the neighbors would call the cops and animal control. It was terrible. She a lot better now, but she still does it.

Misty has never done that, but Toby on the other hand has many times and of course he does it at night, and when you go downstairs to fill the food and water bowels, guess what I step into, yuck.

We are gettng her teeth cleaned when we return from Dewey and I will tell my vet to check her throat and see if there might be some reason for her to do this retching

Vet did a dental yesterday and said he did not see anything that would cause her to retch would like it was a hair or even an allergy. Told him she does not do it all the time so now he thinks it could be a hair
